I'm doing final drive service on my 98 Tourer for the first time. I've got it all apart, splines look great but I have a question:

The 3rd o-ring doesn't appear to be in there.  I don't know if it disintegrated(no pieces anywhere) or maybe the PO/dealer didn't replace it when it was serviced? I've cleaned it up and there isn't one in there. There are 2 grooves in that piece where it goes on, one near the top and one down deeper. Where does that o-ring go? I'm guessing the top groove, but without an old one there to know for sure, I figured I'd better ask.

Thanks.

Does "The Elusive 3rd O-ring" page help?

Yeah, I've zoomed in on that pic and I can't tell if it's in the top groove or was pulled up from further down.  Looks like the top groove but I want to be sure.

Anyone?

Got the service manual? If so, on page 12-12, there is a line drawing that shows the drive in profile, and the O-ring sits in a groove near the end of that collar.

Yeah, I looked at that, it wasn't real clear, but it makes sense it goes in the groove in the top of that collar.

Thanks. I guess that's where it goes.

Thanks, I figured that must be where it goes.

All went well, except for the excessive swearing getting the driveshaft in the u-joint. It apparently requires 473 f-bombs to go into place. Someone should update the procedure in shoptalk. It would have been nice to know that ahead of time.

I don't know if you took your shocks off, but when you do that, then
when it comes time to slide the final drive back in, you can
lift the swingarm up and the driveshaft will slide  into the ujoint
pretty easy...

Yeah, I did take the shocks off. Still couldn't hit the hole. Moved the swing arm up, down, looked in with a flashlight, put it where I thought it needed to be, wiggled, swirled, turned the final drive to align the splines, swore...repeated that procedure a bunch of times, then it went in, despite not doing anything different than the time before. It's all good.

Just happy the splines were all good. First time doing it, wasn't sure if the PO had serviced it at all, was a little scared of what I'd find.  He had all his tire changes done at a dealer, who knows if they serviced the driveshaft. Apparently when they replace the tire, they choose to leave the 3rd o-ring out. Or maybe it was there but they pinched it and it fell apart and got shredded. Who knows.
