I have narrowed my choice between the Garmin Nuvi 550 and the Tom-Tom Rider2. I like the Zumo but I'm too tight to shell out the bucks that they command  Angry

I'm leaning towards the Nuvi due to poor reviews that I've been reading about on the Tom Tom. Does anyone here have either one of these? If so, how do you like/dislike it ????

I can get a brand new Nuvi from Amazon for $250 along with a RAM mount for about $40. The Nuvi is waterproof, has an 8-hour battery life (rechargable Lithium Ion) and the battery is removable, so a fresh one can be held in reserve....I like that  cooldude

A new Tom Tom is much more but I can get a used/referbed unit along with the handlebar mount for the same price as the Nuvi ($250) on Ebay.

Decisions decisions......

Can anyone that has either of these help a brother out?

I don't know about those particular models... I don't even know who manufactures them...

BUT...

I'm a fan of Garmin.  If they're different manufacturers, I'd shoose the Garmin.

I know that's not much help... but it's the best I can offer.   Cheesy

I know you just said the Zumo's too high, but I'd highly recommend it... I'm LOVING mine... See if you can find a used Zumo 550, now that the new generation's out the older Zumo's should go down in value some...

Hi,
Check out pricegrabber.com, or Amazon, I picked my Garmin 550 for 650.00, it works, came with ram mount for bike and a mount for the car also, and the wiring for the motorcycle. It has blue tooht, and mp3 built in.The new 660, does not come with a locking mount, so you have to take it off the bike where ever you stop. But it does have a larger screen.
I road in the rain and it had no effect on the 550. I would do it again, just picked up a ram mount and cradle, and wiring so I can set it up on my new to me Valk, and move it between my VTX and Valk.
Hope this helps.

I travel a lot over seas...and they (EU) seem to like the Tom-Tom...personally, I think they SUCK-SUCK....they get you close...but when you need them to get you there...close is not good enough...not even hand granade close.... tickedoff

I have used Garmins and aside from out of date maps, they worked like a charm...here in the States... cooldude

IMHO...

I’ve been looking at the Bushnell ONIX400 GPS.  It has the ability to down load current radar maps of your area along with aerial satellite images of your location.  There have been many times I’ve wanted to know if the rain coming in was a long soaker, or just a passing cloud!  With the XM download, you’d know!!  They cost about $500, and the XM satellite is about $50 a year for the radar download portion.  It’s a neat system.

I talked to 2 guys this weekend that have the Zumo 450.  No bluetooth, but they both got them for just over $300.  Maybe you could consider this option?

Was that the Nuvi or the Zumo?  I didn't think the Nuvi was waterproof???   ???  If it was the Zumo, could you send me the link?  $250 is a great price.

The Garmin Nuvi 500/550 are both waterproof. The differnce between the two is that the 500 only has maps of the lower 48-states and the 550 is all of North America

I purchased a motorcycle mount for it off of Mountguys.com for $25 deliverd http://www.mountguys.com/category_s/2288.htm

Thanks...I actually went to Garmin's website and looked at the Nuvi 550.  My only problem with it is that it does not have MP3 capabilities.  Right now, I have a Garmin Quest and an Ipod.  I'd like to combine the two with something like a Zumo 450 or 550.  I really don't need the blue-tooth or XM, so the 450 would probably be adequate, but they are harder to find.  And sometimes, I think I might want the XM...I used to have it and cancelled it in favor of an Ipod, and sometimes I miss it.  So I'm leaning towards the 550 a little bit, but the price is just crazy.

The prices are crazy. That's why I didn't have one..... There was a 450 on Ebay a couple days ago that had a lot of accessories with it for $400 "buy it now". I just looked and it's gone.

from about 5 yrs ago....most of the guys on the Motorcycle Tourers Forum recommended it.....I use it in the SUV and on the bike.....it cost me ~$750-800 back then.....I've gotten my $$'s worth out of it, but may look at one of these new ones....especially if they are in the $200-300 range
