I saw a you tube video on the GOLD WING FORUM where the owner changed the gear oil and after removing the old gear oil sprayed brake cleaner into the fill hole to clean out any remaining sludge or grime left in the carrier letting it drain out the bottom hole. He recommended waiting 15 to 20 minutes before refiling to give the brake cleaner time to disapate & adding 3 to 5 oz of gear oil to flush before refiling with the recommended 150cc or 5.1 oz of gear oil. I've never done it this way before & asking your advice if that is a good ideal or not. THANKS.

Not!  just use quality synthetic oil and if you have dirty looking oil, after a couple changes with the synthetic, the oil will come out as nice as it looked going in

Sounds better than using extra long Q tips cleaning the sludge out. 21 tips in all to be exact! Well time to go shoppin' again.  Smiley

I too would not add a solvent to my enclosed drive. Would rather just add fresh fluid, drive, and drain again, maybe about a 1K miles interval 2-3 times, to remove anything in there.

I've taken a few VW motors apart, there was always something lurking in the corners on the bottom of the crank case, but it never seems to get stirred up and suspended in the oil. It's heavier, and that's why it's at the bottom.

So called sludge and grime may not be that, it is probably moly paste from the drive shaft splines.

Although if it is the first change is may contain some fine metal pieces from the initial break in process.
