Are there any markings on the rear wheel to identify what year the wheel is? I've got a spare wheel and I'd like to know if there is going to be a problem before I try to put it on.

If I can recall... The I/S have Concave rivets And Tourers have Convect rivets On the rotor part...
But sorry I don't know if you can tell the years....

I don't have a rotor on the spare wheel but I don't believe it's an I/S wheel. It's an unpolished rim. Inside the hub there is a circle with 96/1 in it. Is this marking significant? Is it a manufacturing date? When I darkside this rim, I'd like to know before I mount the wheel if I need to shim the rotor.

I do not believe there is any variation in the wheel portion from year to year or model to model. Once you start bolting up a rotor thats when some parts need to match or they wont work

The wheels are all interchangeable. Differences: In 2000 and later, the rotor was different and the alignment with the caliper was off a bit. In 2001, all the wheels were polished and the area behind the rotors were just a cast surface. If you use your old rotor on the new wheel, you'll be fine.

The whole point of this is figuring it out before you try to install the wheel on the bike not after you install it and find out it is incompatible.
Sandy, thanks for the info. Just to make sure I understand what you're saying. If your bike is a '97-'99, use the old style rotor and bolts. '00-'03, use the new style.

U probably have this figured out by now! But the old wheel has a 1J in front of the wheel size part# located on the rough casting of rotor side, where as the newer wheels have a 2J to start. Just a note! a ST1300 rotor will fit the old wheel also. 99 Int has the new wheel.

I have a rear wheel from a 2000 w/ the brake rotor on it( recessed bolts). I just want to make sure I understand in this post. If I want to install this wheel on my 97 standard I need to change the rotor on the 2000 wheel to the rotor that's on my 97 wheel for it to fit properly. I'm new to Valks and don't want to screw anything up. Thanks....

I have an IS and the rotors are different between the IS and the Standards and Tourers but it will work and on my IS the bolts were recessed but now they are not I have a Standard Tourer rotor on the rear now just shimmed the rotor with 8mm washers and the bolts are on top no clearance issues whatsoever. Just wanted to put that out there...

My understanding is that if you use the rotor that came with the wheel, it will fit all models, all years. You only get in trouble if you mix and match, ie a 2001 wheel with a 98 rotor will have problems.

Well in my case the rotor had cracks in it and more than one I might add was not pretty I used a Standard Tourer rotor and shimmed it out and all was good

No. The rotor has to match the year of the bike. For example, if you try to install an '01 wheel on a '97 with the '01 rotor, you will have to shim the rotor so it won't hit the caliper mount. If you install a '97 rotor on the '01 wheel, you won't have a problem.

Read Sandy's post above. The match of bike year to wheel year isn't important, the bike year to rotor year is.

Well, after reading all the above, I just put a 01 interstate polished wheel on my 97 standard. I took the rotor off the wheel that came off the 97, working fine for 30,000 miles, and put it on the 01 wheel.
I then put the 01 wheel, with the 97 rotor, etc. on the bike. It does not fit! The rotor is too far in. The inside pad is all the way toward the wheel, and the outer pad in in the middle. The rotor is too far toward the wheel. It rubs hard.
Do I need to take it off, and put the 01 IS rotor on? That is what it looks like.
That would be contrary to the posts above, who said to keep the rotor with the bike, not the wheel.
Ideas?
Thank you.

If you read earlier in the thread you'll read where I was told that. I'm the one who started this thread asking the question of determining getting the correct rotor.

Well, can anyone say for sure about the rotors, bike years and wheels? I have an '01 Interstate and want to buy an extra rear wheel, but with all the confusion about rotors not fitting on bikes, etc, I do not know if I should try and buy a 2001 or newer wheel and a 2001 or newer rotor. Does anyone know the facts about this?

I am not sure if there is a clear cut rule becauase I thought I understood it several times now and still got it wrong. Here is my experience and it was just resolved tonight. I have a 97 standard. I bought 2000 wheels and had them polished. I bought a 99 rotor becauase I thought I needed the recessed bolt style rotor to work with the 2000 wheel. The rotor turned out to be too far outboard and rubbed on the caliper. After talking to X Ring today I tried the 97 rotor on the 2000 wheel and all is fine. (Having never taken my wheels off before I am really good at it now) I am still confused as to the rule but I give up and I am rolling again and that all that matters now. Thanks for the advice X Ring......Mike

I give up. I have heard it both ways. I have seen it work both ways. I guess it is just what fits. Try one, if not, put the other one on.
I took the 01 wheel and rotor off, put a 97 wheel on, and put the 01 rotor on it, worked fine on that bike. Then took that 01 wheel, put the 97 rotor on it, put it on the 97, and will not work? WTF?
I guess go out, pull it all off in the AM, and put the 01 rotor on. Cannot understand why I can go one way with one, and have to do the other with the other one?

Kinda got me wondering. 97 thru 99 standard and tourer took same wheel and rotor. All Interstate and 2000 up models took all the same rim and rotors. Now what does this mean I guess when I buy a extra rim if one rotor doesn't work get the other. I know I'm running a different back rim. The one I had when I traded for chrome rims had the bolt on the outside. The chrome one has the recessed head. I do know the rotor doesn't look the same as my 98 model. Be what heck it doesn't rub. I've got a '97 Tourer. My spare rear wheel is from a '00. It works fine as long as I don't intermix rotors - i.e. keep the rotor with the wheel it came on. -RP

Here let me confuse you some more LOL the Interstates mine is a 99 had the late model rotors "ie" they are not undercut and the bolts are "flush". Now for the fun part I used my wheel and the early model rotor did not change anything except the rotor all I did was shim the rotor up with 8mm washers has worked great for almost a year and counting

Maybe by looking at the bolt side of the rotor gives you some clue but it is the mounting surface (the backside) that is the controlling factor in rotor location.
Look at the backside!

If you look at the pictures I think you can see what is different look at the hub depth on each wheel it looks like the early models are deeper in the way the shoulder is cut but could be my eyes too

OK. I just put the 01 rotor back on the 01 wheel, and all fits fine on my 97 bike.
So, I guess I go back to what I originally thought, and said here, until "corrected".
Keep the rotor with the wheel.
