I finally got the "new" motor installed in the 1200 and all the FI stuff removed and my carb stuff installed along with all the new parts I had installed on the old motor. First dumbass move was when I was pouring in the coolant. I had previously installed an aluminum block in the upper radiator hose, meant for a temp probe. I suddenly heard liquid running out of someplace and started looking frantically....only to find I had forgot to install the temp probe. There's no way I could turn around fast enough to kick my own butt....although I did get a volunteer from Rita if I still wanted it. Finally, after everything was filled and connected, I wanted to turn the engine over a bit to circulate the oil since it had been sitting for a while. Turned on the key, hit the starter....zip. That was 3 days ago and it's been bugging me since. I've spent a fair amount of time going over the schematic and hadn't come up with an answer....until this afternoon. The neutral wire from the gear switch on the front of the engine is lgr/red, and the Std. only shows neutral since that switch is limited in function. With the new motor which came from an SEI Limited '85 model, that gear switch shows all the gears on my new gauge. I wired all that up, it involved changing pin locations around to match the input connector on the gauge. It also meant removing the lgr/red wire from its original connector and moving it to match up with the new gear switch harness. In doing so, the OEM circuit on the '84 didn't know it was in neutral. It suddenly hit me this PM so I stuffed a jumper in the back of each connector, hit the starter and away it went. So, I did some mods to install a jumper and tested my work....great. Then....while standing there looking at the bike, I'm thinking....I don't have any headers or mufflers on it but I'm wondering if it will run. Turned on the gas, moved everything out from around the bike, key on and let the carbs fill....hit the starter and BANG....away she goes. I had installed #38 slow jets(same type as the Valk) and had desmogged the carb system. I suddenly realized I didn't even use the choke, goosed it a couple times and it jumped right up there, then dropped back down to just under 1k rpm for the idle. Ran smooth, loudly...but smooth, no smoke. Shut it off, waited a couple minutes and hit it again. You can't blink your eyes and it's running. I was walking 3' off the floor the rest of the afternoon. Tomorrow I want to hit a muffler shop to have them make a couple extensions with a shallow "S" in it to move the pipes away from the frame. Next will be repairing the damaged alternator wires and then move one.

My friend that did the leather work for me wants me to send him the two fenders and side covers. Told me he has a handyman that comes around to work for him on call and he was a paint and body man for over 20 years. My friend said he'd tell him what was needed and let him go to work. Later this Fall when it cools down in Florida, he wants to bring them back with him and while here wants to build a new seat pan for the bike, probably around October. Not sure but if the bike looks too good, I may not want to sell it.  Grin If I do, whoever gets it will get one of a kind with everything either new or rebuilt so they shouldn't have any problems with it.

Not yet, you can't really tell much has changed on the surface from the last pics I posted. Maybe the only real change visible would be the addition of the new gauge that replaced all the old uglies. Those originals were big and round with the add'l. indicators mounted in between. I felt like I was being sized up by a giant Praying Mantis.  Grin

Glad you had success John.  I used to work with a guy that would come in to work in the morning on occassion and say that he had figured out the problem that we had been working on the previous day.  He fixed it in his sleep and couldn't wait to get to work to try out his theory.

Terry, that's about what I did in this case. The more I thought about it, this one particular ltgr/red wire kept popping into my head. I finally traced out that wire and found the problem....it was me. Grin I had made a wiring change that left a circuit open.

This engine has been sitting for quite some time so when I run it now, it will smoke a little. It's on the centerstand but still gives that boxer puff of smoke at first start up. I think the major reason for the smoke is due to hardened valve seals from sitting, and with more run time they might soften up and seal better, kinda like the fuel rails on the Valk. That's my plan for now, the smoke isn't real heavy so time will tell. It's a low mileage motor but sitting will still take a toll. Today I plan to adjust the pilots and sync the carbs, it already runs better than the prior motor but needs some fine tuning.

Hey, the smoke will keep the skeeters out of the garage.  Grin

Yeah, kept Rita out of the garage also.  Grin  I had it running quite a while this afternoon while doing a carb sync and the smoking seems to have let up a lot. I do have a puddle of coolant under the front end, doesn't appear to be coming from the weep hole, almost think it might be from the overflow dumping extra out. That puddle is near the outlet, it's either that or the radiator has developed a leak. Hoping to mount the temp gauge tomorrow so I can tell how hot the engine may be running.

cooldude  Sounds like you are making better progress since you changed out the engines. Can't wait to see the final reveal.  cooldude
