CORRECTION!!! I FORGOT THAT I DID MY BIG BEND TRIP AS WELL AS A COUPLE OF OTHER SMALLER TRIPS DOWN TO SOUTH TX AS WELL AS ROUND ROCK ON THIS TIRE. TOTAL MILEAGE ON THIS TIRE SHOULD READ CLOSER TO 7,000 MILES.

Put this tire on a month before Inzane and rode for about 1,000 miles before I left for Morgantown. Put on about 4k miles on my trip and bike has been parked since then. Started cleaning the bike when I got back home from my work travels this Saturday and discovered this. If I am going to get only 5k miles from the rear tire, I am going back to a CT. BTW, I've been running 44 PSI on the rear tires on both my bikes. Additionally, you can see the center of the tire has almost squared off.

Man, that is horrible miles for any cycle tire regardless of road conditions and how you drive.

There must be a reason on why jakewilson, etc. is selling the avon cobra rear tires for under 125 bucks since only a year or so ago were around that 160 mark on sale?  I got near 10K on my last one but am sure not as hard of a rider as most, but still, 10K is not great.

If you are putting that kind of miles on in less than one year,  a CT is the way to go no doubt, otherwise just throwing money out the door otherwise.

I ride quite aggressively, but even then I should get at least 8k miles from a rear tire. I switched from a CT to a MCT in the hopes that I would get between 8k-10k from a rear MCT. But if I am going to get only 5k-6k, then it's absolutely pointless in installing another MCT. I am going back to the Darkside, I just placed an order for the Yokohama Avid Envigor from Amazon.

What pressure were you running?

I did mention that in my original post. 44-45 PSI religiously. I check and top-up every time before I ride.

Check the date code on the tire. I get 4 times the mileage you get on a rear Cobra. 46 PSI faithfully

The reason I never ran Venoms was seeing too many pictures like that.  (and delaminations or build irregularities)

It is said the Cobras are better.

I could only get 8-9K (good miles) from rear ME880 radials, and always ran higher pressure, but of a dozen or so, I never had one look like that.  I'm on CTs now, forever.

FWIW, that tire looks like it still has miles left in it, despite the cupping.

I am disappointed in MC tires for Valkyries in general. Seems I get one good one and then one bad. I have a couple of new tires with maybe a 1000 miles in my shed that either cupped or out of round. I have had bad Avons and last time a Metzler. Is it the weight of the bike or what? Do Harleys and Goldwings have this trouble?

Seems for touring machines like my Interstate there should be MC tires that can go alot more than 10,000 miles. I enjoy the confidence I have with my current CT, but it's not fun on bad uneven driveways or any offroad.

To make matters worse, I found a bloody nail on the rear tire of the other motorcycle. Pulled the nail out, about 3/4" long and the air started leaking out fast. Patched it for the time being, but I am not at all confident about riding on a patched/plugged tire. I have less than 1,000 miles on that tire. Not sure about the tread wear, but I am going to take it to the local dealership, who are Avon authorized dealers and see if that tire qualifies for Avon's Road Hazard warranty. Today's just not been a good day at all!!!!

Was great meeting you in Morgantown.  My last Avon tires went 12K but the trip to Spearfish prompted a replacement, I figured I would have easily picked up another 2k of local riding before Inzane 2015.  Good Luck with the Avon dealer.  Please post results.

Hi Big Poppa--I have 7000 on my E3's and they have lots of life left--but I will be going to the ATT when I do need a new rear.  I like Britman's tire cost, but everything I have read about the Austone has been positive.  Glad you made it back from Inzane.  Nice meeting you.

It was nice meeting you as well. I will be taking the tire to the dealership on Wednesday/Thursday and submit all the paperwork through them since they were the ones who mounted the tire on the bike. I'll keep posting updates.

It was a pleasure meeting you as well. The E3's use a harder compound than the Cobras and are supposed to give better mileage. Personally, not a big fan of harder compound tires. I've decided to go back to the Darkside and just placed an order for 2 Yokohama Avid Envigors for both my bikes. Will get them mounted sometime this week. I've heard good things about the Austone Taxi Tire, but the main factor that keeps me away from this tire is it's speed rating. The speed limit for this tire cuts off @ 99mph and that's a big NO NO for me because I like to do triple digits on the slabs and I find myself at those speeds more often than I realize.

Lots of info here, but I've never seen a 200 size motorcycle tire on a Valkyrie go more than 7000 miles-ever. 180s do a lot better.

I am installing tomrrow...
I have done 2 times Sporttrack 3, but they are no more available here ... so Sporttrack 5..

Let me know how the Sportrac 5 works for you. I wanted to switch over to the Sportrac 5 before I installed the Avons, but both the tires I got from the ebay seller had tears in the sidewall.

Big Poppa, I have been running Bridgestones and get 12-15 k on the rear and around 20 on front. I too am faithful about air pressure; 40 in front, 42 in back. As for your new tire which you patched, if you don't trust the patch why not put a tube in it?

On my 98 tourer the recommended psi is 33. What are the reasons for running higher on a MT

Running the manual recommended psi, is for the OE (Dunflop) tires.  Nobody runs those (I don't think they are even made anymore).

Bike makers think you will be happier with a smoother ride, even if your tires wear out in 5K.

Bike maker's safety people think soft tires stop better.

The best tires available, are virtually always better quality than OE tires (at least for cruisers and tourers, and every car and truck I ever owned).

Well Big Poppa after highly reccommended these tires I also took on  a rear Cobra. Love the tire but with my calculation I'll be lucky if it last 9,000 mi. to the wear bar. With 2500 mi. I lost .075 of tread life already. I've been running 42 psi. I will say our roads in the area are very "abrasive" as chip n' seal technique is being used on ALOT on county and S.R.'s across Indiana. Front is getting ready for replacement thus I'm staying with the Exedras from here on out. Frt. Exedra hopefully 14,000 rear, 11,300 38 psi. (under  inflated)  :

The fronts are actually behaving very nicely. I got a little over 14k miles out of my last front tire and I could have probably got another 1,000 or more. The only reason I replaced it was because I was leaving for my 4,000+ miles Inzane trip. I replaced the front with another Avon Cobra.

Good thread.  I'm running a set of Cobras now.  They do ride good.  I have put like, 4000+ miles on them and they look about halkway worn out.  If 5000 miles is all they deliver I might as well run Stinkos.  That's the top end mileage of a rear Stinko on my Electraglide.  I'm not thrilled about going to the darkside.  My buddy did that on his interstate and when that tire took a screw he went back to an MC tire.  He said that the darkside tire gave him a few scares.  Nevertheless, I'd rather run a MC touring tire and get more miles.

I have been riding for over 30 years, well over, like 36.  I have run every brand of tire there is.  The worst tire I ever had was the HD Dunlops.  Back in the 1980s Dunlops were awesome.  I wore a bunch of them out in that decade.  Then I went to Continental tires and they were always good tires.  In the lean years my wife and I had a big road trip planned.  Both of our bikes needed front tires.  I ordered two cheap Chinese made tires, Cheng Shin was the brand as I recall.  I mounted the tires myself and they did awesome.  Yea, who knew?  In the last decade I have just tried to go with what the bike shop had on hand or what was a decent price.  The last set I wore out was on the HD EG and that was a set of Stinkos.  I mounted them myself as the HD wheel is smaller than the Valkyrie.  Very mixed reviews on that tire, the Shinko 230s.  They ride really good but, wear out in a hurry.  As heavy as the Valkyrie IS is I think I would not feel comfortable on a Stinko tire.  Maybe, I dunno..
