Ok so based off advice from here I think I will desmog while I have the gas tank off.  I plan on using the shiny desmog kit from redeye.  I do have a couple questions though...

1.  I have seen discussion of changing out the vacuum lines as well, is this something I should do?

2.  Where should I purchase these lines?

3.  Is there a write up for how to do this?

4.  What is a Pingel?

5.  How much more of a job is it to add the Dan-Marc fuel shut off and why would I do this?

FYI I have a 2000 tourer with 31K, will be installing Mark T exhaust soon.  Also I am not a cut rate mechanic, I am a no rate mechanic.  I can follow instructions like a cook book, but don't really have any "working" knowledge of things mechanical.  That said, I have been relatively successful if I have good instructions to follow.

Thanks in advance.

I've not done the kit from Redeye. But the goal of the desmog is to get rid of the vacuum lines. If you weren't doing a desmog then it would be wise to replace them. The only one you'll need to replace is the vacuum line from the petcock to #6 intake. I don't know if this is included in his kit or not. The pingle is a different brand petcock. Generally those in favor of them go with the non vacuum model. I have 160k on 2 bikes with stock petcocks. I have had to do a cover set replacement on one . In my opinion the DanMarc is a wise addition. It's pretty easy to do and gives a little peace of mind of stopping a hydro lock. If you go to the main tech board there will be a little search box upper right. Type in desmog, hydro lock, petcock, etc. and you will find many threads about the subjects. Just keep in mind there will also be many opinions also. I think there is a write up in Shoptalk about doing a desmog also.

I just got my parts from Redeye. I have to say, TOP SHELF!

I got a desmog kit, I'll try to do that while I have the carbs out. I'll post my trials and tribulations, as they occur....

Awesome, that makes sense on the vacuum tubes based on the thread I was reading.  I did see the shoptalk write up which makes me think I could do it. It makes sense to replace the petcock vacuum tube and I will do some research on the fuel shut off.

I did the shinny desmog kit on my standard when I had the carbs out, made it a lot easier.  Everything you need should come with the kit other than a vacuum line for the petcock.  I used a Dremel cutoff tool on the lower metal lines.  Check your fuel lines while you have the tank and air cleaner off, I found a big dip in the line to the left bank of carbs.

Put the fuel petcock on the right rear intake runner. It is easier to get to. As a suggestion, when removing the pair valves , plug the thread holes with the bolts with a sealant or do same with set screws.  I have heard of a couple cases where the holes were tapped to deep and caused a vacuum leak that was found after it was all put back together.  The possibilities are slim , but I do not chance it. Rebuild the OEM petcock and use the correct length fuel line. I also recommend using the correct vacuum line metric size.

Hey, so... what does this mean.  Do you mean run the vacuum line here?  Or the fuel line or...

I do plan to rebuild the OEM petcock, what sealant do you recommend Loctite?

Sorry to be such a noob, thanks in advance.

He's saying instead of the vacuum line coming across the motor and to the petcock from #6. Put it on The right side. Believe that's #5. Just pull the plug on #5 and put it on #6. Then put vacuum line on #5.

No sealant on the petcock. Da Prez was referring to some sealant on the blocking of the air box hole.

Most of the cutoff pair valve tubes, you can flatten with a vise-grips and fold over and crimp to seal them.  Much faster very effective.  Cut them off with enough length left to flatten and fold.  I did this to both Deerslayer and Jade.
