I have had my 2000 Interstate parked for 8 months and I am getting it ready for a trip and I find that when I ride it, I can't get over 75 mph. It runs fine at low speed, but when I give it 1/2 to full power, it bogs really bad. I have checked the petcock and I had seafoam in it. I am not sure what to check next.

Sitting that long is hard on the carbs. I suspect you have some blockage in them. Lots of guys swear by using cleaners such as Techron, B12, etc. They didn't work for me. I had to remove the carbs and thoroughly clean them. If you end up going this route it is advised to go ahead and replace the float needles while you are in there.

You may have to check the air filter/intake to see if anything has made it's home in there.

You have at least 3 main jets clogged. Buy new ones, install and have fun on your trip. Mine did this for several uears and I tore the bike apart chasing ghosts. Everyone had a different opinion but clogged jets never came up. Took a chance one day and pulled the carbs and found 3 mains on the left bank clogged. I dont even know how it ran to be honest. Would run just fine at low speed but in 4th and 5th it would bog down and peter out around 80 mph. It would go faster but took a good mile to hit 100 from 80. I was even told the motor was worn out  at 140k. Don't be like me and chase ghosts, get right into those carbs and clean and inspect really well. Hope this helps |

Given time, the Seafoam may soften the blockages, and let them be sucked out of the jets; it's happened to a couple guys on an Intruder forum. Question is, how long can you wait for it to work, if it works at all? It took about 6 weeks for an Intruder owner in the UK, until it suddenly had full power; he was real patient.

Question is, how long can you wait for it to work, if it works at all? It took about 6 weeks for an Intruder owner in the UK, until it suddenly had full power; he was real patient.
I ran probably 100 cans of seafoam and barrymans b12 through mine with no results. Kinda a crap shoot with a major clog |

Thanks. Lots of good info. I will be trying B12 and if that doesn't work, I will be pulling the carbs on Friday.

This is just a thought. The jet needle goes down into the main jet. If the main jet is clogged, is it possible that the clogged jet is holding the needle and keeping it from moving up and down with the vacuum piston. The chrome cover can be removed to see if the needle is indeed stuck. Removal of the vacuum piston would allow you to remove the jet needle and spray carb cleaner down through the main jet.
Again, just a thought.
