Every Forum I've ever been on gets into this subject. Here's my take on it. I promised my wife I would always wear one while riding so I do. That said, I don't like a law that you MUST wear one. Should be a personal decision. Period  |

Ok, I see I am out voted, I started riding in Fla. also, and had to wear one. I used to Road Race, and had to wear one. Now that I am an old fart, I only wear one when it's cold. And that ain't much here in Fla. Once I get the little lady out of her half shell, and into a 3/4 and I can hook up the comm set, I may be temped to wear one more. So far she does not see having to buy a helmit just so I can hook the Ant comm system, she says she can yell in my ear just fine, as long as I am not wearing a helmit.
Each to there own, but you could get hit crossing the street, and not have a helmit on, and hit the curb. I enjoy not wearing it when it's real hot down here, so sometimes I were one and sometimes I don't.

I'm with brother Fudgie on this one. I suppose if I had started out wearing one when I learned, then maybe I would wear it all the time. I rode across Nebraska once, mandatory helmet state, temps near 100, I was miserable. The minute I hit Colorado it came off. I wear if it's real cold but I don't like them. My wife is an RT at a hospital and she does see bike accidents. She doesn't like them either. And yes, I have been in an bike accident. Just my preference.

Always wear one especially after a group member got in an accident at low speed a few miles from his house. Now not sure what his condition will be after his surgeries and physcial therapy. The kicker is he just returned from a month long cross country trip always wore his helment, decides to go pickup his mail at the local post office decides not to wear one and gets hit by a car at low speed. His head swole up 2 times more than normal then they had to drill a hole in his skull to relieve the pressure. It may not be cool to others but I will always wear one along with armor.

If I lived in a non helmet law state I would still wear my helmet 99.9% of the time.
I do feel that it makes me much safer.
However, there are times that I would ride without it.
For instance there is a convienance store about 1/2 mile from my house, if I had the choice most of the time I would not put on a helmet just to ride there and back.
The few times that I have rode without a helmet I have found myself very conscious of the fact that I was NOT wearing one and found that I was riding much more cautiously than normal.

I'm with Timber on this. i'm a nope. Kit kinda made me this way. Before her I was 90% of the time except in town. Now I'm a 1%er.  I will wear it if I'm solo and riding the interstate for a distance. I try to wear one at work but alot of times I'm not in the mood. I made Kit wear one in 07 on her 1st trip to Sturgis and she was miserable. The ride home was great cause they were in the trunk! As soon as we hit the State line the lids come off. We're gonna buy those 'novelty helmets next year for us. Something small thats easy to hang off the bike. I want to ride into MI more but she won't ride in a helmet State for long. We took our 3/4's to Sturgis this year to use in the rain. We wore them for 12 miles out of 2198. Waste of time packing them since we never did wear them in the other 3 rain storms. I wear a beanie when its cold and a visor when its warm. Keeps the sun outta my eyes. I hate when your setting in gridlock and its a 100 deg with a helmet on sweating, no thx. I know I should wear won since I work EMS. But I don't. My boss told me since I am a example for safety in the public eye I need to be careful. Told her I am far from a safety example!  I'm not really afraid of crashing and dieing. Like Kit always said, we will go out doing what we love.  Or just sit with dirty diapers. |

I ALWAYS wear a helmet.....I've had too many friends get their noggins saved by having a full face helmet...I still have a couple of half helmets that I need to throw away....good thing I never went down before I wised up..... It's got nothing to do with the Gov't wanting me to, I would do it even if they told me NOT to....same thing with the seat belts.... Besides, my face is MUCH too handsome to risk scuffing up....heck, of I didn't care about that, I might end up looking like that old fart.....Bashful Bob!!....  ... ...  |

Funny you bring up Nebraska. I came out of Wounded Knee (104 deg) into Gordon NE and glad I didn't have it on. Made it way to about past O'Neil NE before I realized it was a helmet State!  |

Or just sit with dirty diapers. I've had head injuries before. I use to do amature rodeo, bull riding for a few yrs. Got my head layed open by a 1100 lb brahma once. Concussion and some memory loss, couldn't remember much from 3 yrs prior. Month later rode that bastard again, helmetless. Spurred him like no tomorrow cause I owed him one. Have had barn gates and hogs knock me out. Still don't go out and do chores in a helmet. To each his own. We like the 'free' feeling I guess. Its a totally different world to me. Its the blunt force trauma to my chest I worry about. Kits chest might be able to take it but mine won't.  I try and not let fear get to me. Fear is how you fall. We're young, mabe we'll wise up in 30 yrs or so.  If I sit with dirty diapers, there better me a good supply of Anti-monkey butt power around!  |

I live in a no helmet law state, i guess it was the way i was raised. But growing up we just did not wear them. i do when i have to, but i really like the wind. i know its wrong and alot of people don't approve of not doing it. But i think to each their own. We do live in a Free country.
If you had one on, maybe you wouldn't have made that recent purchase! Just kidding with ya! I'm working out some details for our Oct ride, i'll let you know in a day or 2. |

O.K., well sometimes if I'm not aware that I crossed a border. As soon as feasibly possible, its off!
I hate helmets. I hate helmet laws. Hate having to take up otherwise valuable cargo space on a trip.
Been in accidents over the years as well, fortunate enough not to have been too serious. I figure if its your time then helmet or no helmet, you're gonna get whats coming.
Nothing to do with looking "cool". Like others have said, being in an armored get-up while riding jacks up the riding experience for me.
Back in the day, when California passed their mandatory law I sold my bike. Later moved to a no helmet state, got my Valk and two became one again.

Most of the time, everywhere. You might catch me going down the road to fuel or something, but out on the road I'll have it on. I keep remembering the gravel road I slid on face-down after hitting that steer one night in the fog, and seeing what the gravel did to my plastic bubble faceshield. I guess I mentally compare the possibilities to the story of the teenager who "accidentally" shot himself in the head while playing russian roulette. If I choose to do something despite knowing the possible outcomes, then it's not an accident if $*it happens. Just my thinkin' on the subject...  |

I just bought a Modular helmet, I normally use a half. But lately I have been trying to get into the habit of wearing the full face. When we ride into DE (no law) I still wear it. I try to practice ATTGATT ,after hearing so many stories of capable safe riders going down. |

I hope all of you non-helmet wearing riders have an organ donation sticker on your licenses---oh yeah,
make sure you have health insurance with long term care so I don't have to pay for your care when you have the brain activity of a turnip.

I live in a Non-helmet state...COLORADO. I will not get on a motorcycle without a helmet. It keeps the sun off my face. It keeps the extreme cold off my head for the most part. It keeps the wind out of my eyes & road debris out of my eyes.They use a lot of pea gravel here in the winter time & I have been hit in the face sheild with that kind of gravel where my face would heve been. At the speed I travel on highways I don't think a helmet would save me form whatever may befall me if I go down but it does so much more. I have had two instances where it saved me from maybe serious head injuries. I will always wear one when on a motorcycle. There are lots of pros & cons on wearing a helmet...if your head doesn't matter, don't wear a helmet. If your head matters, wear a helmet. I am sure you've all heard, " ten dollar head, ten dollar helmet. Anyway...I DO WEAR ONE. IBA 1990 tommy t

Why fight it? Death is permanent.  Also I just read about a half helmet wearing female rider on the NC Dragon just got some teeth knocked out. And if the helmet-less dead could choose again, they would wear one too. |

I have occasionally gone without a helmet... maybe once a year for about 5-10 minutes... but I mostly wear a helmet no matter what. Especially if I plan on going more than a few miles and faster than about 30-35 mph.

Nope!!! Illinois and Iowa no helmet laws. Missouri has one and I don't go there much for that reason. If Illinois would give us a concealed carry law I would wear one 100% of the time (you know kinda of a trade-off thing). But since we have Chicago the "real" state capital that gave us Obama we're screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Idiots

Well Warren, You probably know my answer already, but I will answer anyway because I think it's a good poll and I'm intrigued by the answers.
I ride with a helmet and body armor 100% of the time. It may not save me, but it should at least reduce the road rash and head injuries. Its a personal choice for me, but one I take seriously. I enjoy riding much more, because I know I've made some effort to protect myself.

Rightbackatcha! Same goes for those helmet wearers involved in serious accidents but their helmets managed to preserve the slightest of brain activity. That helmet ain't gonna prevent it. |
