Twas a 195/55-16 variety, making her accelerate quite nicely, but I plumb wore it out.
Down to the inner tread's wear bars, hmph.
Switching to an ATT, but that's not really why I'm posting.

Parts should be here by the 2nd, including a new U-Joint and boot. I do ride in quite a bit of rain, unlike many I'll leave for work in a downpour. I'm guessing the torn seal let in water, the inside of the swingarm is red too. Redeye shock bushings and rear orings are also inbound.

The pinion cup failure made me late for work on Thursday. I'm guessing hard accelerations didn't help its longevity. What a sickening sound when you let out the clutch, clackety-clack and no-go. Never gave me any hint until it quit, although I did hear a strange sound as I downshifted to stop at the light where it failed. That was holding the clutch in as I shifted down too.

Thankfully, I was only 3 miles from home at 0515.
Happy to have the wrenching time, throwing all new pads on as well. Who knows, I might even sling some wax on the painted parts. 2funny

I would never be so lucky. I have never commuted on my bike so the chances of being within five miles of the house would be very slim. It's nice that you were so close.  cooldude

At least your attitude is great -- it's not a mishap, it's an opportunity!   cooldude

Earl I have to ask if that is due missing maintenance. When last was the rear end stripped and lubed?

I'm pretty sure he indicated a torn boot was letting water in.  Anytime that boot is removed it needs to be replaced with a new boot.

Thanks I missed that.

I wonder how long the disaster takes to happen.

June of 2015 (13,600 miles ago) is when I installed that tire and did the splines lube with Honda's Moly Paste. The seal was in good condition, but it clearly didn't mate well with the pinion cup and tore. I probably boogered up the seal and failed to notice it while getting the driveshaft to couple to the Ujoint.

Surely you've done that dance called the "Daniel Meyer driveshaft wiggle". Well, it's best done without the final drive anywhere nearby, just the driveshaft.

"Earl's Alternate Method" made that coupling happen with the final drive fully on the wheel, its studs started to the swingarm with no nuts, boot partially off and right hand helping align the ujoint. THEN, I coupled the ujoint back to the engine while seating the final drive to the swingarm by rolling the tire forward with my left hand.

I don't recommend that method. I've since then attended IZ16 and seen Daniel wiggle for the class.

All kidding aside, that seal, 91261-ME9-005 is $7.50 well-spent, as previously mentioned.

Edit: As for the Ujoint boot, it was stiff but intact at the time of tire installation. I ordered the new boot based on the difficulty of reinstalling that old stiff one. I haven't pulled the boot yet, but it may be holy, which would account for the water in the swingarm that migrated past the torn oil seal at the pinion cup.

Seems I remember DDT having chronic problems with that & his driveshaft tube/swing arm needed some welding, was letting water in. Might wanna inspect it closely cooldude
