I'd rather do this by motorbike.  Was in Bangkok last week (OK - that's truly insane traffic)... but Chang Mai, Phuket (pronounced pooket - 'ph' is always 'p'), and lots of destinations outside of Bangkok along the coast have decent roads and fantastic scenery.  Takes 3 or 4 days of solid riding from Singapore to Bangkok, and groups are recommended because of civil unrest in southern Thailand near Malaysia.
