I am thinking about building some cruise controls. What is everyone using? I am tired of the ccs100 I don't want to use them anymore too many failures. I am thinking about the rostra units. Can anyone tell me if the 250-1223 unit triggers off the coil or a pulse generator and will the one on the interstate work?

Attic Rat,

I have an McCruise system on my bike. The connectors they use are questionable and not meant for plugging and unplugging regularly. You will eventually bend a pin.

The unit is top notch and does a great job of maintaining speed. I have not tested it yet going through the mountains say at 55mph. The solenoids are known to stick (pulls vacuum off the #5)  if the bike has sat for an extended period of time. I was able to get everything working with no new parts just taking it apart and cleaning. I suspect my 99 I/S sat for a couple of years as those were the last dates in the maintenance log.

I pulled this paragraph of the Rosta website.  Hope it answers your question.

Step 3: Providing Vehicle Speed Signal
Part Number: Various
The Global Cruise system can adapt to pre-existing VSS input signals between 2,000 and 38,600 Pulses Per Mile (PPM). We also offer the 250-4165 magnetic VSS generator for speedometer cable-equipped vehicles, and the inline 250-4160 for early General Motors transmissions.

Here's a link about installing the Rostra on an Interstate. In this thread there's a mention of losing the speedometer when the VSS gray wire was connected.

Kodiak, I have that setup in a box.  It's junk.  $900 worked for 1.5 years 20k miles.  They are terrible at standing behind their product.  I'm not impressed.  Another member bought one same time I did and it lasted twice as long as mine and now his doesn't work either.  Attic you spent a week with him out east this year, just ask him.

Yes I did all the trouble shooting, still not working.  I removed it this year.

Joe I know that you and Jim are not big fans to that cruise control. You are not the only ones that I have heard bad things about that cruise. If you are not using any of that cruise could I buy the handle bar switch from you. I think I can make it work on the new cruise.

The biggest problem I have seen with these units is the pins they use are not designed for what they are using them for. I know this from replacing hundreds of pins on FA 18 fighter jet electronics as well as the test interfaces. The harness going to the computer the moment you stick a probe into the front of the connector it's FUBAR. Even using my needle probes on the backside was a problem occasionally.

I have all ready rewired the connector from the solenoid vacuum to the computer I basically put a four pin trailer harness in there with extra wire to make it easy to check and troubleshoot. Ask me how it's working at InZane 2017.

I must have been lucky as I received loads of help including PDF's of all the shop manuals for the unit. I was very lucky I guess. That reminds me I need to put these PDF's on my phone just in case...lol.

It turned out to be one bad pin and solenoids sticking. One thing that tripped me up initially is that the unit takes about 2 secs to create the proper vacuum to engage. If I hold the throttle at speed for a couple of seconds the unit holds and adjusts just fine for me now. Ask me again at InZane 2017.

I've successfully been using the Rostra 250-1223 on my '99 I/S with no problems.  The signal does tap off the VSS successfully BUT, I would suggest a slight addition to the stock installation instructions.  Use an opto isolator chip in between... so that the VSS is the input and the output side is connected to positive voltage and the grey wire.

If you do decide to install the Rostra, feel free to PM. Would be happy to provide more details lessons learned.  One thing to consider is mounting the main unit behind the dash.  There's plenty of space and the cable can easily be run to the throttle connection on the front right side.  Plus you won't loose an valuable space below the seat (where many have mounted the main unit).

Cheers,
Steve
