They must have been hard pressed to find someone to give it to. He has only said the words disarmament and hasn't done anything to make it happen. North Korea was on the verge of getting rid of them and then someone botched it up and they are fully armed now. Iran is fast becoming a nuclear threat Russia still is there so whats changed for the better? Actually no I may be wrong I think I heard something about reducing our stockpile. I say the man no way deserves it.

Yes, I suppose that only brilliantly displays the true worth of that once pretigious award that has been awarded to some of the world's greatest persons. Oh well..... One more monument falls to a popularity contest.... Sad day it is...

Yes he did win. The nomination deadline was Feb. 1, 2009. Many questioned his nomination. At the time his ratings were still sky-high. There has since been a lot of regret on the nomination. ( I read the story on AOL) I guess it goes back to the old adage "haste makes waste".

Time will tell, I guess. ??? It does seem a little premature... I will say that anyone that would take the job of US President at the time that he did, with the disaster that Bush and the Democratic Congress left us in, deserves our respect and patience. We can only hope he proves to be worthy.

Duffy, I applaud your "bipartisan" take on the disaster that Obama took over! I think you're the first person I've ever heard call out Bush AND the Democratic Congress. Well done, sir!

Nominated two weeks into his term! But then, it was a very busy two weeks!?!? Jeez, could they have been a little less blatant? This cheapens the prestige of the award, obviously you don't have to acheive anything to win it!!

Well, you forget, he created the Office of the President-Elect right after the election...so he had a head-start... When I read that news article this morning about him winning, I about puked....asking myself WHAT has he DONE yet??? But then I read that the majority of the election party was leftist....which answers that question...and then I read they had given the very same award to Jimmy Carter...so that pretty much tells me that the Nobel Peace Award must have turned into a Cracker Jack prize... Tim it's ok to get on the soapbox when you know that you are right in what you are saying. You beat me to the punch on the mention of Jimmy Carter. The fact that the most incompetent president that has ever held office was bestowed this honor truly shows how unimpressive this award has become.
Jimmy Carter who in the late 1970's slashed the money supply and drove up interest rates (via his hand picked man, Paul Volcher) in a misguided attempt to curb inflation. Inflation caused by printing huge amounts of money to support his numerous government "nanny programs". I find it as no surprise that Jimmy is a big supporter of Obama, who will probably relieve Jimmy Carter of the dubious honor as the president who most devalued the dollar during their administration.

Jeff, you may be onto something.....maybe thats why they handed this honor to him before he actually accomplished anything, so he wont continue the war. But he was never going to send 60,000, thats what his general wanted to ask for, he pressured the general to only ask for 50, then that was changed on paper to 40 (something like that) so now "president" Obama can send like half of 40,000 because he knows so much better than the general on the ground.

So, all you have to do is CLAIM that nuclear weapons should be de-commissioned... war is bad... terrorist should be our friends instead of enemies... and the US is not a religous country...
Simply stating these things makes you a Nobel Peace Nominee... and then you WIN...
Wow...

My fellow conservatives I am in agreement that General McChrystal needs to have the troops that he requests in order to fulfill his mission, and unless the mission changes I assume the general is the best judge as to the needed troop levels. However, I am not in total disagreement with President Obama on his current analysis, and before you flame me, let me explain. What Obama is currently contemplating is precisely what George Bush had already decided as far as troop levels go in Afghanistan. George Bush with Secretary of Defense already realized that a "win" in the conventional sense is not attainable by conventional means (and possibly not by "unconventional" means). As long as Afghanistan holds to its tribal mentality there will never be a strong central government, and the people in Afghanistan will fear the Taliban more than the government and the US presence. In order to succeed (assuming that it is possible), the people in Afghanistan will have to fear siding with the Taliban more than siding against the US forces. That would require tactics that are currently illegal, and even if they were legal, they would quickly meet with condemnation by the rest of the world. Currently the Afghanis publicly support the United Nations and the US effort, but when confronted by the Taliban in the absence of protection from the UN/US military, they quickly side with the Taliban in order to stay alive. In order to maintain a level of force necessary to provide this "constant" protection would require a force the size of what the Soviets deployed in the late 1970's early 1980's....the cost would be staggering....and as we already have seen the Soviets were unsuccessful even with a force of close to a million troops. George Bush and his Secretary of Defense had already decided (correctly) that Afghanistan is not winnable in a conventional sense, and had resolved to maintain just enough troops to disrupt the Taliban from ever being able to establish a stronghold. The only reason Obama found it necessary to deploy additional troops earlier this year, is because he had demagogued the issue during the campaign. During the campaign he found it necessary to draw a contrast to the Bush deployment of troops to Iraq vs. the draw down in Afghanistan. This solidified the Independents who were dis-satisfied about the Iraq engagement, and gave the Bush haters something to cheer about. This is the "reason" troops were deployed to Afghanistan earlier this year....to "prove" to the American people that he was "fixing" what George Bush has "incompetently messed up". The simple fact is that the mission in Afghanistan had already been redefined by George Bush, and the troops levels were fixed accordingly. Certainly there may be reasons why this needs to be readjusted from time to time, but that is not the dilemma that this president faces. The dilemma he is faced with is returning to the strategy in Afghanistan that Bush had already implemented, but yet not make it obvious that he either through ignorance or through demagoguery misrepresented the situation during the campaign.

Jim I respect your opinion, and you sound informed and reasonable, but dont forget...theres NO WAY any of us "armchair quarterbacks" can have enough good information to make a proper decision. Even GW Bush when asked said his father was of little help because he wasnt read into high level information.
So I am not going to say if I agree with Bushs ideas your ideas or Obamas........I just know he put a general on the ground, told him what the plan was, asked him what he needed to accomplish it and now he is stuck in a dilema because if he honors the generals request he blows it with his followers/party and becomes a "war president" and if he doesnt he may just be responsible for a bigger mess....
I would give the general I tasked with the assesement what he asked for.

Hey Theo, don't go throwing rain on their parade. They had almost determined our Afghan policy and exactly how to implement it.
That is when they weren't busy "throwing up" and "getting sick" because an American president won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama's pay Czar is going to have to take some of that 1.5 Million dollars. 1.5 million is waaay too much for 12 days work. 12 days from becoming president to being nominated for prize.
That works out to about 40 million per year. Way too much for a tax payer subsidized position.
Even I could live with that. 1.5 Mill for 12 days. WOW!
He will not have anything to do for the next 4 years, as he did enough in 12 days to earn a Nobel Peace prize. He should have every problem in the world solved in 4 years at that pace!

And you think Obama deserves it after 12 days in office? There are other people in other countries too to consider.
I think they should have had the decency to wait at least a year. I always thought a Nobel Prize was hard won and earned. This was just given away.
