I'll Explain issue. Have a 2000 interstate.  When roll on throttle, engine response fine. But it's slower than normal to return to idle. No the throttle cables are not holding the carbs open, It's just sluggish to return to idle.

I used carb cleaner on and around carb boots ect and no indication there is a vac leak anywhere.  But something is 't right. Help!!

A cleaner method may be to use a propane torch (un lit).
Any vacuum lines deteriorating?
Is it a condition that just started? Sudden onset, or gradual?
Is this the first time out this year?

Not that I have answers, but the more info tossed out the the better the replies may be.

if mine idles at over 1000 mine will do the same thing. if I turn idle down to 900 it works perfect..
have no clue why but that's what it does.

I would think some sticky diaphragms might cause that or the carb throttle linkage itself.

I have that issue on my "new to me" '97. Numerous tanks with cleaner have improved but not yet cured the problem. My local pro shop says it usually is caused by a "too lean" condition. My pilots are set at 2 turns out. Gonna set at 2 1/4 soon to check that.

I experienced this hanging idle problem at the end of last season. I installed a Shiny desmog kit, a new Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT), and did a complete carb rebuild including new slow jets, a/f mix screw o-rings, and float needles. It idles down perfectly now. If I had to decide which was the most contributing factor I'd say partially clogged slow jets. Makes sense if you think about a lean condition as the cause of a hanging idle.  Definitely check the other things mentioned though. A binding throttle cable could easily be the cause for example...as could a vacuum leak.

Haha, they'd all have you do countless repairs to your Valkyrie, not even knowing if something is wrong. Or not!

With your complaint, the first suggestion should be to add some fuel additive and run the gas out before anything else.

After that, you should consider having your carburetors synchronized since this is the most common reason for your complaint.

Finally, It is a mistake thinking that how the bike runs under throttle has anything to do with how it will run at idle or just off idle.

I would strongly suggest to make no adjustments to the carburetors before having them synchronized.
