I ran out of gas, switched to reserve and made it to the gas station to fill up but when I put gas in the tank it would only hold 2 Gallons. It should hold 5 plus. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like your petcock is failing. One of these will fix it up.

Before jumping to that conclusion let's ask whether something has been added to the fuel line.  Lengthening the fuel line can result in a bubble giving that symptom which is momentarily solved by adding a little more pressure going to reserve.

I think it is the petcock. I have been getting a strong gas smell.  Seams like it is coming from that area.

Getting a new filter at the same time would be a good idea.  cooldude

Willow is correct. If the fuel line is too long, it could be getting kinked and block the fuel.

There is a drain hole for a leaking petcock it is on the bottom of the petcock. Rebuild it or get a new one.

I had fuel starvation problems cross-country pulling a heavy trailer after fuel system mods.  Had to keep the fuel in the top third of the tank for enough head to push the gas through.  Line wasn't completely straight but had a little lift in it - wasn't kinked.  Could have been a bubble in there.  Soln on the trip was to slow down and keep the tank full. On that ride mileage got as low as 17mpg - huge demand. On return, installed bigger Dan-Marc, straightened fuel line, moved inline filter off the gravity line and to the fuel pump line.  Never a problem since.

Running out of fuel at around the 1/2 tank level, is a classic sign of a plugged tank vent.

When you run out of fuel, then open the fuel cap, while listening for air going in.

Just because this happened once, makes it hard to diagnose what the problem is.

If it does it again do like said,  Crack the gas cap, but then see if it will run. If it does and acts normal, then the vent is plugged. If not you have other issues.
