Thinking of doing a 1000 mile Fly-n-Ride for a low miles 2014 Valk. cooldude
Don't have time to find a Honda back rest/rack combo - which appears to be way overpriced, and  looks just big enough to strap on a six pack of Guinness... Cheesy so not sure how useful it would be anyway.

Could anybody who has toured or done a cross-country on their Valk post a pic of what they used for luggage strapped on the rear seat?  I've got a couple different tail bags from other bikes, but the Valk seat looks to be too narrow to support them? And the passenger hand rails look too large diameter to accept a bungee strap hook? Guess I could just wrap it around and hook onto itself - but that is usually hard on finish surfaces.

TIA

This is what I got for my supervalk.  A pricey dry-bag, but superior quality that will not leak even at the bottom of a swimming pool.  (watch the included video for details)

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/dryspec-d38-rigid-waterproof-motorcycle-dry-bag-multiple-colors-available

I had a couple other big dufels I put across my solo rack (tiny thing it is), but the ends drooped down and rubbed the paint bad on my saddle bag lids. I also had to carry a big lawn and leaf bag, to bag my non waterproof duffels, in case it rained, or everything would be soaked.  And it is always my experience that on long extended trips, you always get wet.

This dry bag is very light weight, but also stiff walled and will not droop on the sides.  I holds its same shape full loaded or empty.  So no rubbing my paint anymore.

It also has a very interesting set of clip straps so it can be mounted in a variety of ways to suit any bike or rider.  Though I always like to use one of those bungee NETS for things I do not want falling off my bike under any circumstances.  You can get big ones.

Really the only drawback other than price, is it is a bit difficult to load.  Since the top rolls up for waterproofness, you cannot take a big stack of clothing and just drop it in.  It has to be loaded a bit slowly a bit at a time.

They make a few different sizes, and this one is good for me for a whole week (using my saddlebags for all my bike-specific stuff, and my dry bag to go in the room with just clothes, toiletries, and a pistola.

These are both true. The "passenger hand rails" seem to me to be only
useful for mounting Hondaline accessories (like the rear carrier) to. I went
with a group to the grocery store last spring, we had bungee cords and
more than one size of those "web straps", but it was almost impossible
for me to even carry the six pack of Guinness...

You could try a couple of ratchet straps looped through the hand rails and hooked onto itself then snugged up.  Stays off the paint that way.

PC,

It may be too late but take a look at this:  http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,91898.0.html.

But, it attaches to a Honda sissy bar....

Tank bags don't work well with the OEM handlebars and gas cap cover.  Just thought I'd clear that up (before it comes up).

Robert likes his Honda OEM rack but, as has been said, it's pricey.

Good luck!  Should be a nice trip.

Get adjustable bungie cords and you can wrap em around the grab rails with the hooks holding on to the bungie.   I did that today when taking a package to UPS.     Lightweight straps that either ratchet or adjust/clamp would work as well.    I do have a bungie net but it would not work on your Valk, the hooks are small and metal (I use it on my 82 CB900).

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I still have about a week or - looking to fly to TX (From Tucson) next weekend and do an Iron Butt back.  Just hope the weather holds.  He has a clone screen, so I don't know how effective it will be if the temps drop to normal winter conditions across central TX; prolly not like my cut down Legacy Valk IS fairing!  Wink

After hunting around a bit, I was able to find this:

Looks like I need to get a Cortech type mount tail bag.

That Dryspec bag looks nice - but wonder how it would fit on the tiny-ish 2014 Valk seat?  "And a pistola?"  coolsmiley

Funny - I spent a bit of time this evening looking for Tank Bags!   Grin

I used the old redneck approach for a "temporary" bag solution that is now kinda permanent as it is really great and functional.  I was desperate for an immediate carry solution so I went to Home Depot and bought an insulated lunch cooler for $20.  I took an old aluminum sign and some fender washers and pop-riveted the sign to the back of the bag.  This made it easy to use some insulated copper wire to secure the sign to the grab rails.  The bag is basically laying on its back side with the zippered end pointing towards the back of my ass.  Doing this allows me to carry larger items that keep the zipper from closing.  I've used this all last season to carry everything from a dozen large ears of corn, groceries, tools, and hardware.  Oh, and most importantly, two one liter bottles of Glenfiddich 12 year old single malt, though the 15 year old is much smoother.

Sorry, no pics of it on the bike right now as it is covered.  Will try to post some later.  Here's a pic of the bag.

I like the Husky solution for a soft "trip only" bag  cooldude ...

On trips where I need more than the saddlbags I use
a Givi trunk on the OEM rear carrier... the grab rails are
useful for mounting the rear carrier and not much else I
can find...

I think the Givi is a useful non-extravagant thing to have around, easy on, easy
off, fits both bikes, and is on the shelf out of sight most of the time...

PC,

where in Texas is the bike?  We're in Abilene.  Will be glad to help you along your way if it is on your route.

Lots of heavy trucks, construction, and traffic on I-20 between Abilene and west of Odessa.  Not a pleasant ride.

Thanks Bill,
The thought is appreciated.  The bike is in Dallas.  I've done the ride from Tucson to Big Spring ride often, but not within the last year or so.  often - we had a few projects at the VA there.  Hate it that your DOT is continuing to install the cheese grater traffic barriers.

Hope I have not hit a snag, but the owner has not registered the Valk in his name.  He did send me a copy of the title, with an illegible scrawl releasing interest in the bike.
The PO (a Gregory K***) purchased it from Maxim Honda in Allen TX.
Thats all I can find out - Maxim Honda would only confirmed that they sold a bike with the same VIN.  I have googled for Gregory's contact info - but the phone #'s I have found are just answering machines with no name, and the email address bounced back.

Any chance anybody on the site knows Gregory K?

Nelson-Rigg has nice tail bags with a life time warranty.

I use zip-ties attached through plastic hoops on bag, and then around grab rails.

To stiffen a floppy bag, cut 2 broom sticks to length and insert into the bag, pack on top of the broom sticks. A cardboard or plastic board stiffner cut to size on top of the broom sticks also helps.

Ogio Elements Rock N Roll bag.   Been rained-on, snowed-on - Zero leaks.  Highly recommend securing whatever bag you buy to the grab rails with ROK Straps (18-60") Motorcycle Straps.    Bag won't move an inch.

Holy Moly!
Now that's some luggage!
First tank bag I have seen as well; any details?
I've had tank bags on all my bikes - seems odd this bike has nothing available aftermarket.

River Road Sissy Bar bag medium.  Secures nicely to Honda luggage rack/passenger backrest. Ton of space and looks nice. Includes rain cover. Tank bag is Kuryakyn Grand Tour.  Includes Rain cover. Comes with terry cloth insert for bottom.  Cut up an old Nike golf towel and had wife sew to bottom, adding an extra layer.   Had issues with another tank bag scratching previous moto.  Honda tank has zero scratches so far.

Apologies Pago - Tank bag is Kuryakyn GranCruise - model 4139.   Discontinued, but you can still find it for sale http://www.chaparral-racing.com/product/kuryakyn-grancruise-bag/025-4139.aspx.   Fits nicely.   bscrive, wife never/ever wants to ride.    Cover removed to charge battery night before x-country trip.  Of course forgot to put back on.   20 miles into trip had to turn around/retrieve.  The other stooge move was bringing a gas can.  No issues finding gas.
