John Deere - 30 second oil change (non valk)

Some may hate it, Some will love it. I was skeptical of the design myself when first introduced to it. The testing hours incorporated in this have been countless over the past year and prior years before I came to the turf and utility side of Deere. Hundreds of mowers and thousands of hours.

I had to come to the realization. After coming from a specific customer based in forestry equipment (loggers), to a residential based product line offered to every average Joe. There are folks in this world that do not know what an oil change is, let alone know how to perform one.

Not offered on all skews, so those who prefer to perform an oil change the traditional way still have that option.

Before conspiracies start that this is only a way for Deere to reach into your wallet when it comes to an oil change. These oil/filters probably will cost $60 at a dealership. Since the 100 series are sold and marketed through mass channels (Lowes and Home Depot) they can be purchase from those stores for half the price if not cheaper.

Oil/filter all in one combination.

As one of those harry homeowner slobs this is aimed at (Bought my 100 series at Home Depot ~10 years ago and haven't done any maintenance to it since) this is brilliant...

Any plans to retro-fit it to the older models like mine?

This is probably the number one questions from everyone. Our mowers are basically tested to a life cycle of 250hrs in most cases. For this new design we tested several up to 700+hrs. Some with typical 25-50hr interval oil changes. Others we took to 700+hrs without an oil change. We had no engine failure, leaks, or lockups.

Basically you are doing about 1/3 of an oil change at service intervals. Every time you put a new pre filled cartridge on, you are taking 1/3 of the contaminated oil out and replacing it with new, as well as a new filter. This has been evaluated again and again and again by both Briggs and Stratton and John Deere engineers to last upto 1000hrs. When rated to mow typical yard sizes up to 1 or 2 acres. You should get a lot of life out of one.

No plans that I know off to retrofit. I think it can be done on 2016 and up models with certain Briggs engines. But the cost to purchase the parts from Deere dealers is probably more expensive than purchasing a new mower. Deere Dealership mark ups on service parts is stupid

As for the Deere version, is the cartridge basically a throw away or is it exchanged and recycled?

At this time it's a throwaway, but plans may improve in the future to make it an exchange.

I just bought a new lawnmower this fall with a Briggs . Says you don't change the oil, you just add. Kind of like the old HD motors of positive loss. The owners manual warns you to check the oil often and to expect to add oil. In the owners manual there is a tiny blub that if you have to change the oil you remove the oil through the dip stick hole by flipping the mower upside down. I checked, there is no drain plug.

I'm assuming it's a push mower? I have a Kohler on mine and it's the same.

Yup. Poulan Pro with electric start, no choke. Hard to start when it's cold.

I had a jd rx75 mower from the early 90's I bought used 12 years ago. I never changed the oil and only checked or topped it off after I flipped it which was at least a couple times a year. I finally sold it last year for the same $300 I paid for it with the same oil in it I bought it with.  That kaw engine didn't have a filter. I'm sure a 1/3 oil change with a filter has to be better than that.
