Hey brothers and sisters. Not at all a fixer, but did replace the start stop switch on my 2000 Valkyrie Tourer. Once done the bike started. Light bar works, the head light not at all. Check the fuse looks good. Any recommendations on my next steps?

In the Standard and Tourer, power for the headlight goes through the starter button, when the button is released. It is very common for that part of the switch to fail. Sometimes, popping the switch back on and off will get the lamp to light. Some of us have taken that switch apart and cleaned it; some of us have added the SmartSwitch or a relay which switches the actual power to the lamp, to reduce the current through that switch, so it lasts longer.
The Interstate already has relays for the Hi and Lo filaments, so power through that switch is already low.

If you removed the plug behind the headlight, maybe you didn't push it all the way back into place.

Had thought of and tested that the connector is in all the way. Would a bad side stand switch cable cause this?

is it possible you pinched and cut a wire going to the start switch when you put it all back togather.

No. You will find the schematics at the back of the manual: http://valkyrienorway.com/download.html

A light bar is a aftermarket item added on by the previous owner. Do you instead mean the dashboard lights?

Just in case you might want to check the start switch as has been suggested. http://www.rattlebars.com/mtz/starter.html

Chris I would appreciate any new perspective you can offer. Power sport Tampa diagnosed my bike in having a bad start stop switch and side stand switch. The stop start switch is on the right side of the handle bar, that contains the start button and stop start orange switch Replaced the start stop switch with a new OEM part. Once installed bike did start, however headlight did not work. Reconnect the old side stand all seems to be ok with that switch. Thanks for your help, Merry Christmas to you and yours. Lloyd

Lloyd So, the whole assembly; only one connector, with everything in it, plus the two contacts for the brake light switch. Hate to say it, but you may have gotten a bad one. I assume you replaced it because the bike wouldn't crank? But, the headlamp worked with the old assembly?

Lloyd Ok two things. First, I too had to replace that switch housing. Brand New the start switch needed the maintenance because the contact was too tight in it's slot. Second. I would go back and undo the connection in the headlight, clean it with contact cleaner and then make sure all the pins are in good condition before re connecting. Good luck

Get a meter and test the bulb connector in the headlight case.
If you have no reading at the connector, you could have a bad switch.
Could happen, but kinda doubt it.
Test the bulb, with a battery and a couple of wire leeds, just don't touch it with your hands.

Last two are good direction. Will pick up a multi meter and see if the connector to the headlight is hot. If it is then the bulb needs to be replaced. If there is no power should I consider the sw is bad even though the mc starts?
