I see that there are recommended shift speeds for the 2014/15 Valks. Is it ok to go higher with no problems? I was wondering what others were using for their shift points? Thanks...

Yep, depends what state of mind I am in. Sometimes I shift low rpm (2500) and sometimes high (6000). I have never hit the redline though.

Thanks... yep, bike is new (only 2 miles) and since it is still snowing in upstate NY I haven’t even ridden it yet and I bought it 3 months ago. I’m 65 but I still like to have fun in a bike. That being said, I would never push it hard or go anywhere near the rev limiter but I drive local and I am looking forward to slamming some gears in town and in the local rural roads...

Old post but what the hey: Important is to not lug it or over rev it. Lugging is bad on the bottom end and over rev is bad on most everything on a new motor. Pretty much bad on any bike for that matter. Don't hold steady at one speed for long durations, vary the speed and RPMs. Don't let it set and idle for a long period of time.
Get outa town where you can ride how you need to and break it in. Shift points in a manual are typically too low, listen to the bike you'll know when to shift. Bike should be broke in at 500 -700 miles. Change the oil and filter both then. Then ride it like you want to.

I shift depending how I am riding. If I'm on the go fast mode I shift at like 5000+ and afew times have hit red line cause I can feel the cut out. Then there are times when just out for a cruse, or after a stop sign like in a small town that I start out in 1st , skip through 2nd right to third, and again skip through 4th right to 5th. And as long as I keep it over 2000 rpm, and then want to accurate just twist the throttle and it never lags. Others that I ride with are down shifting but this bike has NO problem with plenty of go, so I can keep my feet on the hwy pegs and give it alittle twist.

Wow, you are way out in the finger lakes region. Don't get out that way much at all. A few years ago went that way to take my daughter to check out Buffalo State. She only lasted one semester there.
