Title: Galveston Post by: kidcatfish on November 25, 2009, 04:49:16 PM Can any of you Houston/Galveston hands tell me the conditions of Texas City dike and the island itself since last years storms? I want to make a trip back down there, but haven't heard how all that area has faired. I bring my pop up to stay in so I am not needing motels. Thanks.
Title: Re: Galveston Post by: Gear Jammer on November 25, 2009, 05:22:42 PM Don't quote me, but I think I heard the Texas City dike is still closed, and people have been ticketed for going onto it. As for Galveston, the city is coming back and you should be able to find plenty to keep you busy and in trouble
Title: Re: Galveston Post by: kidcatfish on November 28, 2009, 07:35:05 AM I'll check back this late spring/early summer then to see if they got it open by then. Thanks for the comback, would have replied earlier but I had log in problems that Willow had to fix.
Title: Re: Galveston Post by: roboto65 on November 28, 2009, 07:51:27 AM I do not know about weather you can drive on the dike but i will tell you this from my standpoint being as I drive by it on my Tugboat often... there is NOTHING there the storm wiped the whole dike clean pretty much. It also took out Seawolf park also well the building anyways it is still in disrepair and does not look like they are going to rebuild it :'(
Title: Re: Galveston Post by: kidcatfish on November 28, 2009, 08:10:21 AM That is sad. Took my kids there when they was still at the age they enjoyed it. They have their own kidos now. Might have to go farther south to Port A to bank fish.

There is plenty of places to go fishing on the bay, down on the West end of the island, and points further South. You can even fish on Bolliver penninsula, there's not too many people over there yet. I just got back from Rockport (Goose Island State Park) and had a great time. Got into a school of Specks on Sunday evening and caught about 25 each, but all were just under the 15 inch limit. But it was a lot of fun anyways. Don't give up on Galveston, but the Texas City dike is another story. Never tried it myself, so I don't know how many are pulling fish out of the water, and how many are just drowning worms.
Also not sure how much I'd trust the fish there, either. I just have no info on that. Title: Re: Galveston Post by: kidcatfish on November 29, 2009, 08:26:14 AM Had a bud that kept his sail boat in clear lake at Waterford or something like that. Still gonna have to wait till after first of year to go. Figure something will be done with the dike, it has too big a function to not fix it back up. I have fished off the jetties on the east end of Galveston. We'll get back down there and check it out. Nuther thing nice about retirement, no time-table to have to work from!!! thanks for all the responces. Easier here that getting there from northern Arkansas and then finding out what it is like.
Title: Re: Galveston Post by: Dodis on December 01, 2009, 02:43:27 PM Living about 15 blocks away from the Dike, I am also disappointed in the progress, but so are lots of homeowners awaiting FEMA funds...
The Corps of Engineers has recently awarded the contract to deepen the Texas City Ship Channel, and some of the material removed was planned to increase the size of the beach area, and may still be used for some of the repairs, but I have not seen anything to that effect yet. The repairs along the levee, north of the Dike have been proceeding well, and there are still lots of people that fish along this shoreline. From the levee road, you can see the Dike and most of the damage, or I should say, where the buildings were... Just don't go out on the Dike, or they will ticket you :police: (if caught). Title: Re: Galveston Post by: kidcatfish on December 04, 2009, 05:39:15 PM Read all the articles, yea will be bad for those who had a buisness on the dike for sure. I bet they do not let a person camp out there llike they use to when it is rebuilt. We have stayed at San Leon in a RV park near the bridge but off the main road a ways. Drove from there to the dike a few times!!! Caught the largest red drum off the end of the dike a few years ago now. Will just have to hope it all comes together soon for yall down there.
