Title: 97 rear disc rotor Post by: berto on August 02, 2019, 04:01:29 PM Back with one more question :) :) Getting ready to swap the rear wheel as I got a nail to deal with.
Scored a straight high mileage wheel off of ebay from a 97 like my bike, the Avon tire on it is basically new and will be put to work but the bearing needed changing as well the rotor (5.2 mm). replaced the left bearing with the double row one and sent the spacer to be machined, then after some reading, got me a rear rotor from a 92-02 ST1100 (looks identical 7.5mm $30 wow) Now the question: the old rotor "inner diameter" is slightly bias toward the wheel, while the new one is perfectly straight (!?!?) Is the old rotor warped ??? did I buy the wrong rotor ? if that... is shimming the solution ? As always, many thanks to all Title: Re: 97 rear disc rotor Post by: gordonv on August 02, 2019, 04:19:53 PM Using a non Valk or GW rotor puts it all up in the air. I'm not able to understand exactly what it is you are say. Pictures would be very helpful.
The year of rim/rotor need to match the right style (there is a range that works, but off hand, I don't know, search should find it). There was a post about someone getting the rotor to work with the wrong rim and aligned to the caliper, and get it to work. You can also add your location to your profile, and might get some local support to help out. The new wheel is from a 97. Did read on this board that the st-1100 and 97-99 valk share the same rear rotor. To simplify the question...is the rotor supposed to be perfectly straight or slightly concave/convex ? The old rotor is paper thin and I suspect is just warped

Parts fiche confirms that is so. -Mike Title: Re: 97 rear disc rotor Post by: ridingron on August 03, 2019, 01:44:12 PM Quote the st-1100 and 97-99 valk share the same rear rotor The exception is a '96 to '02 ABS rear wheel. The ABS system and wheels changed in '96. Not really a problem as the '96-'02 ABS wheels are pretty hard to find. Title: Re: 97 rear disc rotor Post by: SCain on August 05, 2019, 06:11:55 AM You can use the 99 and up rotor on the 97 wheel (Rear), but it will require a shim to keep the rotor from scraping the caliper. A 1/32" to 1/16" washer will work just fine.
I believe the shim goes between the wheel spacer and caliper bracket. Title: Re: 97 rear disc rotor Post by: 98valk on August 05, 2019, 07:38:17 AM rear rotor interchangeability.

As it was the first time, lots of discoveries and plenty head scratching. The center stand and a small jack worked well enough.
First, i can confirm that a rear rotor from the ST1100 will fit the 97-99 rear wheel-caliper set-up. Got it from eBay for $30 and 7.5mm (like new), plus a bottle of tequila to the guy that machined the spacer. Followed all the great instructions mined from this awesome site till i got to trying to torque the 4 bolts on the rear drive.... :tickedoff: how do you get a torque wrench to fit close enough to make it work ???? Soo i just made sure they where nice & tight but would love to figure that one out. Took the bike out for a 30 mins ride through neighborhood and everything seems ok. Next Sunday bright & early will venture on the freeway “finger crossed” |
