Title: How do I get this old petcock screen out of the tank?
Post by: dpcarson on April 09, 2020, 12:23:15 PM
So, finally think I have the IS sounding right and decided to do a little work on the standard.  Pulled petcock to drain the tank and the screen is shot.  Tried to get it out with a small dental tool type pick but ultimately lost it inside of the tank.  Standard, so no fuel sensor plate to pull.  How in the heck do I get this thing out of the tank now?

Tank empty off of bike and tease out the top while tank upside down-maybe? Maybe a hooked probe to help convince it to leave. RIDE SAFE.

that darn fill neck and big hands are making that impossible.  Cant even see it.  Thinking I might need one of those little fiber cameras for my cell phone to try to see it.

Just did this last week..
First remove the o-ring with a pick or something,  then use needle nose pliers to persuade it.  There is nothing mechanical  locking it in, just an interference fit that requires a little force to work it out

Oops,  sorry  I just realized you have a completely different problem.  :(

Did it break apart, and fell in the tank ?

Yep.  I got the base out and some pieces of the screen, but when I was trying to hook the rest of it with the dental pick it fell back in the tank.  Think it will float in gas?  Could fill the tank up and see if it will float up near the neck where I can grab it with some needle nose?  Anybody know?

I don't think it will float. Maybe try flipping the tank over, with a little mirror maybe you can locate it and grab it with some duct tape on a coat hanger.

Why not just leave it in there.

It will lay in the bottom of the tank.

I can see no problem with this.

That is pretty much what I was thinking at this point Ricky. My tractor has a full set of  CA compliant adult proof gas can pour spout in it that I never bothered getting out several years ago. Didn’t think this would be much different. Just figured if somebody knew a trick to it I would get it if I could. Probably just going to stay at this point. It will probably get stuck on one side or the other anyway and just sit there.

No sending unit to foul up on the standard (unlike the interstate).

Is that screen brass, copper or bronze?  So the magnet on the stick thing won't work either.

Just a thought.....hook up a small flex hose to a vacuum cleaner and poke around. It may grab it. May not.

I would try hooking up a water hose to the petcock opening and see if you could flush it out the gas cap hole. Try it right side up and upside down, even shake it. You may need to remove the gas cap. Water is cheap.

Well, been working at it since about 7 this morning.  Everything from trying to float it in water, long flexible vacuum hose, coat hanger with gorilla tape on the end.  That sucker is staying in there!!  Ain't nobody got time for that!

If you got the tank off the bike, and the petcock off as well, just hold the tank vertical, and shake it around until the screen is in front of the hole.   Then grab it at the thickest part with a pair of hemostats and yank it out.  then vacuum out any screen remnants.   (Easy for me to say, I know...)

Finally just gave up on the petcock screen yesterday.  it is just gonna stay put for now.  Now on to other things since I got the "clunk" this morning.  Time for new petcock or kit (guess my cleaning and oiling attempts didn't work properly) and pull the carbs.  Three cylinders full of gas this morning.
