Title: My first HD project
Post by: sixlow on April 09, 2020, 02:47:54 PM
I know, I know, please don't judge ! The Dirty Deeds garage is open to all bikes it seems. The same fella who makes the flags and had me do the carbs on his wife's Yamaha asked me for help with his 04 Road Glide, he went down due to front brake lock up, luckily not hurt and minor scrapes on the bike. He thought bleeding them would do the trick until I told him otherwise, it's front caliper rebuild time. So the local HD dealer wanted $160 bucs for the same parts I got at JP cycles for 77 dollars. He had to go back and exchange just a seal kit for a kit that included the pistons, I had a well versed time fighting the pistons out,  some of them went shooting across the garage like a champagne cork due to the compressed air trick to remove them and I scratched one enough to need a few new ones. Tools required to remove calipers, 12 point sockets only in 1/4, 3/8 and 10mm. Had to be 12 point,  the 10mm ones luckily were removable with my wrench as with all my Valkyrie tools, not one 12 point socket. The bleeder is 3/8 six point. The fluid required is DOT 5. Funny part is where the parts were made..China ?? Should get it done this weekend.

Mike,
I hope you told him before starting that it was time and a half for HD's.

You're right Jim, I should charge more for HD work, it is all foreign to me.  ???
Pappy, funny you say that, once riding with wife's cousin's boyfriend, a real HD man, [wouldn't even think about throwing a leg over the Valk]. We had to come to a quick stop when a light changed, I noticed his brake light didn't come on until the last second of 5 seconds of hard braking so I pulled up next to him and said your brake light doesn't work with the foot pedal. Once we figured out it was the front brake lever I was shocked at how much rear brake he used without locking up, I started to school him on proper braking but got that sourpuss look and just left it alone.
Larue I'm not sure how this all got going so fast, but it is rewarding.  8)
Ron that must be what the guy thought, now I get it.  :2funny:
