Title: 98 Tourer Neutral light
Post by: Bone on July 06, 2020, 03:09:16 AM
Started my own thread so my questions won't interfere with your thread.
I have a similar problem and haven't tried to find a fix. My 98 Tourer has 164 K now and after a near stranded situation I found a way to start the bike. I stopped the bike and when I went to start nothing. Tinkered for almost an hour and realized I didn't have a neutral light. I had the bike in neutral I could roll it back and forth a foot or so so I kept trying the start button. Now knowing the neural light was off I started playing with the shift lever. I few wiggles the light flickered and I found the sweet spot it stayed on. Hit the starter button she fired Smiley
Went thru the same ordeal a couple of times she started with a wiggle to find the light. I called my brother in law to cancel his trip he was going to drive 50 miles to help me or haul my bike.
I'm still riding her in that condition it's been 2 or 3 years. Lot of the time it works like new I've never looked in the manual to locate the switch. Hopefully your fix will help my problem. Goodluck I wiggle the shifter with my foot so far so good.

When the light won’t come on, put the stand up and pull in clutch and it should start right up. If it does it is the switch going bad, or a connection loose.

Thanks for sharing the same problem.  I will report if I can solve it.

Also if you can't get the neutral light on put the bike in first gear roll a little forward under power, clutch in and try to find the neutral again. Had a few bikes that hunted for neutral. 6 Speed Harley's are kind of notorious for not being able to find neutral.

My neutral light often won't come on when the bike's in neutral, so I just have to play with the shifter a bit, usually kick it down gently, and the light comes on.  My bike definitely won't run WO that light on.

Install the Jersey shifter mod, you will find neutral a lot easier and it will shift better.

More info on my Tourer. Just did these test before I read the posts.

Stand down bike won't crank unless the green light is on.

Clutch pulled in stand up or down no crank not sure if I tried in neutral I'll have to make notes.

Once I figure out what isn't working I will replace the switch If I can find one. I've been lucky so far.
