Title: Re: SERK! Post by: Serk on December 16, 2022, 10:47:04 AM Yup saw that, would love to have seen it up and running....
Been trying to offload my tank, know anyone that wants a 500 gallon total system volume turn key reef aquarium system? Come and get it! Title: Re: SERK! Post by: Robert on December 17, 2022, 06:21:31 AM Anyone know how it actually happened?
Aside from the devastation of the water rushing through the stores, I wonder what the smell is like? Title: Re: SERK! Post by: RP#62 on December 17, 2022, 07:51:52 AM The only thing I've seen is some speculation that there's been some wide temperature variences there lately and that that may have aggravated a flaw in the glass.

Acrylic aquariums have some advantages over glass, for instance one like the one that failed here would be near impossible to make from glass, the thickness required would make even the clearest low lead "Starphire" glass somewhat cloudy... Acrylic aquariums are great..... until they aren't... (They're also easily scratched, great care must be taken while cleaning one or you'll scratch the snot out of it, part of why I wasn't interested in the material for my main tank.) https://www.plasticstoday.com/materials/when-acrylic-aquariums-fail (https://www.plasticstoday.com/materials/when-acrylic-aquariums-fail) (My main one is a hybrid, Starphire glass on the front panel, regular glass on the sides and back, a slab of PVC as the floor and an acrylic eurobrace on top...) Title: Re: SERK! Post by: Robert on December 17, 2022, 08:54:14 AM Wow interesting, surprised at the number and size of the failures and that the lessons from the failures seem to be pretty consistent was not learned.
Thanks for posting interesting topic Serk Did not realize how much you were into this. My 10 gallon fish tank and even many of the commercial ones I have seen pale in comparison. Title: Re: SERK! Post by: Serk on December 17, 2022, 09:13:37 AM If anyone's bored or really curious, here's a build log I maintained while setting up my aquarium:
https://forum.dfwmas.org/index.php?threads/serks-300-gallon-in-wall-build.6235/ It's very long and extensive. There's even at least one picture of my Valkyrie hauling long aquarium bulbs in there somewhere... Sadly, about 11 years ago the time, money and energy to keep it nice disappeared, and it's just running along mostly on autopilot now (BTW, the triplets are 11 years old ;) ) Title: Re: SERK! Still have about 920 total gallons of freshwater tanks running. Still enjoy those. I am changing about 500 gallons a week. Title: Re: SERK! Post by: Oldfishguy on December 23, 2022, 06:43:08 AM Well, I different kind of aquarium.
Although it is a rather short lived two week viewing period. I shot this a few years ago with a selfie stick.. Male sunfish building their spawning nests. https://youtu.be/U1p8pkk2478 |
