I have Viking pipes, K&N filter (no prefilter), #38 slow jets and a 6 degree trigger wheel. For this setup, what is the recommended adjustment for the pilots? I seem to recall 2-1/2 turns out but not sure. TIA Title: Re: Pilots adjustment Post by: John U. on March 09, 2009, 05:28:08 PM 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 turns out is the reccommended setting for 35 slows. When I installed 38s I set the pilots at 1 1/2 but needed to open them to 1 3/4. Don't know if the Viking pipes or K&N will affect the idle enough to alter that, but every bike seems to be a little different.

I seem to remember setting mine to 2-1/4 when I installed the 38 slows but it's been awhile. The bike "pops" at RPM's lower that 3,000 and though I would try opening to 2-1/2 to see if it would help. I have exhausted all other know causes of the popping. Everything looks OK.

I recently re-set them to 1.75 turns and the plugs look a little better. I was running a bit lean.

'97 Except California type : 1 3/4 turns out California type: 2 turns out After '97 Except California type: 2 1/4 turns out California type: 2 3/8 turns out Make sure the carburetor synchronization is within specification before pilot screw adjustment. The pilot screws are factory pre-set and no adjustment is necessary unless the pilot screws are replaced. 1. Turn the pilot screw clockwise until it seats lightly, then back it out to the specification given. This is an initial setting prior to the final pilot screw adjustment. 2. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. Stop and go driving for 10 minutes is sufficient. 3. Stop the engine ald connect a tachometer according to the tachometer manufacturer's instructions. 4. Start the engine and adjust the idle speed with the throttle stop screw. IDLE SPEED: 900+'100 rpm 5.Turn each pilot screw 1 /2 turn out from the initial setting. 6. If the engine speed increases bv 50 rpm or more, turn each pilot screw out by successive 1/2 turn increments until englne speed does not increase. 7. Adjust the idle speed with the throttle stop screw. 8.Turn the No.1 carburetor pilot screw In until the engine speed drops by 50 rpm 9.Turn the No.1 carburetor pilot screw out to the final opening from the position obtained in step 8. FINAL OPENING: 1 turn out - 10. Adjust the idle speed with the throttle stop screw. 11.Perforrn steps 8, 9 and 10 for the No.2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 carburetor pilot screws |
