Title: Ole Baldo had a booboo
Post by: Serk on June 24, 2024, 07:23:30 AM
Have only gotten some preliminary details from him, but seems ole Baldo had a little bit of a high side booboo last week. He's currently in the ICU and likely will be for a few more days.

https://www.capecod.com/cape-wide-news/motorcyclist-airlifted-after-crash-in-sandwich/ (https://www.capecod.com/cape-wide-news/motorcyclist-airlifted-after-crash-in-sandwich/)

"Six broken ribs, broken clavicle and scapula...the high side trifecta.

I've been in the ICU since Wed, maybe two more days."

Still waiting for word on how his bike is...

Hoping he'll come around and fill in some details as to what happened, all accidents can be learning experiences for everyone.

And he must be feeling at least a little better, he wanted me to allay anyone's fears, he's fairly confident he'll be feeling better in time to vote, several times, later this year...  :2funny:

(I checked the website for the hospital he's in and couldn't find a "Write letters to a patient" link, seems most are moving away from that with the advent of mobile digital communications.)

:'(   prayers sent for quick healing.   Did he see Jesus on the way down to the pavement?

""And he must be feeling at least a little better, he wanted me to allay anyone's fears, he's fairly confident he'll be feeling better in time to vote, several times, later this year..""

Tell him not to worry. There will be many harvesters coming to see him in the hospital with mail-in ballots to fill in and sign.
Make sure he knows not to sign the Organ harvester forms.

Dang!

I Truly hate to hear this!

We may have differences of opinion but I've never wished him any harm.

Prayers for a full and speedy recovery!

Wow, all kidding aside about the political stuff, hope they’re keeping him comfortable. Man I hate hearing about this stuff. Clavicle and scapula…he’s lucky no neck injuries.

Best of wishes to him and hope he’s home real soon.

Oh man, I know what six broke ribs feels like, mostly healed by now, but I had to draw the line at busted cranium, no scapular clavicle action thankfully
Best wishes Baldo!  Do what doctors tell you & work hard at rehab, you’ll get there a day at a time  :cooldude:
Seek, please keep us posted, you &I have both been in a similar situation as this recently & know how uplifting folks around here can be with positivity

It just goes to show what a dangerous game we play when out riding.

Whether it’s the slightest miscalculation, a few grains of sand, something slippery or some momentary daydreaming or sightseeing, our love of riding can be ruined in a fraction of a second and it doesn’t matter how much seat time you may have. Something can jump up and bite ya in the butt at any given moment.

Baldo, rest up and heal up quickly. Hopefully when the doc says ok you’re back in the saddle again.

I've been meaning to put my thoughts here and just haven't gotten it done.

It really breaks my heart to hear about this.  I hope Bob heals well.  I know he and I don't get along regarding political views but he is a very kind and generous man.

I am hoping for the best and soonest for baldo.

I can report that Bob’s sense of humor was not damaged in the wreck.
I texted with him, told him if there’s anything I can do, let me know.
His response was “ Vote Biden”.   LMFAO….. ;D

Baldo

Pretty safe to say, we have all been on that edge where things could have gone wrong in a hurry.  Sounds like the brain is still functioning as it was before; the body will heal with a few new “scars”.

In time, probably a new machine will be in order.  I find it amazing how many really nice machines are for sale at very reasonable prices.

Heal up, and get back on that horse.

David

I can personally verify that 6 broken ribs SUCK! !  Last July I totaled my Valk and ended up with 6 broken ribs after going over/through the windshield at 30 mph.  Heal well my friend.  It is a slow and painful process.

Hey all,

I apologize for my delay in responding.  I'm healing up, slowly but surely. I think I may have suffered a slight setback yesterday. One of our cats stepped in front of me, I didn't see him, then reached out to catch myself with the bad wing. OUCH doesn't cover it.

I start outpatient PT this week, we'll see how it goes.

As far as the why and how. I have only conjecture, can't be positive. I met with the PD and FD first responders that took care of me. Both to thank them for helping me when I was in a bad way, and hopefully to find something more definitive as to the why. I also left each group with a fistful of Dunkin Donuts cards to feed their donut cravings.

Witness reports say that I skidded, then wobbled before I went down. That doesn't tell me too much, I compare that to what witnesses to a plane crash always say. There is a 30' skid mark, pretty straight with a slight curl at the end. The only thing I remember is brake lights, skidding, then flying through the air.. high side? Speed was not involved, that's a pretty busy main drag, always plenty of cars.

The day was brutally hot, 100+. I was on my way home from work, had spent 2 hrs+ on the road to that point. I suppose there could be an argument made for heat stroke. Also, being diabetic, the heat could have contributed to a low blood sugar situation. They can be pretty nasty. I don't suppose I'll ever know for sure.

I do know that my uniform was cut off, I was laying on Cotuit Rd in my skivvies. I found my socks in the battery box. I told the EMT's that that was my favorite uniform, so thanks.

The worst part of this is this.....because of the heat, I had opted not to wear my armored textile jacket that day. I NEVER, EVER ride without it, but I felt I'd be looking for trouble for that long a ride. Little did I know. So there's a fait amount of road rash, it's pretty much healed up by now. That was fun. My Schuberth helmet is trashed, it pays to spend the money on a good lid!

So on to the bike. It's still sitting in the local towyard, waiting to be returned to me. I don't know what their problem is. I'm starting to get annoyed.

Insurance totalled it. Since there was no impact other than the slide, there's no fork or frame damage. It's all cosmetic.

The bike is valued at $8500. I bought it back for $1808, and got a check for $6500ish. Paint will be approx $1500, I've already spoken to my painter, so I guess I made out ok.

I'm out of work until the end of September so I guess that could be worse. It could be wintertime.

So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I hope I've answered any questions people may have had, (hi Ron).

So, thanks to everyone for their kind words, even if you didn't mean them (kidding).

And I'd like to thank Serk for initially posting about my accident, then his gentle prods to follow up.

I'll be back up in a couple of short months.

Hey all,

I apologize for my delay in responding.  I'm healing up, slowly but surely. ...

I am glad you came out of it better than you may otherwise have.

Much of what you describe sounds familiar to my own experience.

Keep getting better.  It is good you're going to be able to repair the ride.

Thanks for the update!

Some obvious questions - did the first responders or at least the ER folks check your blood sugar? Was it abnormal?

And have you seen if the tires on the bike were low/flat? Having just had a sudden/rapid tire deflation experience that's top of mind for me of course, but curious...

Glad you're up and about and starting to get back to being able to write more than single sentence posts (Sincerely, believe it or not.)

Did you get $$$ from insurance to replace your hat btw? If not inquire in to that, when Kali went down in West Virginia we got a nice chunk of change to replace her boots, helmet, gloves, jacket, etc...

As far as the glucose level, when I asked the EMT if he had checked it, he only remembered that it was "ok". I've found that when I get in trouble with my sugar, the numbers tend to be a bit higher than most people. Usually in the 100-110 area, which is normally considered to be in the 'good' range.

As far as the helmet, no, I didn't go there. But you can bet your sweet bippy I will now! I hadn't really thought too much about it.

Thanks....

"I'll be back up in a couple of short months."
*****************************************************************
Glad you're on the mend, can be a rather long process returning to pre-accident condition. As for the "couple short months"...they won't seem short if your activities are still limited by healing injuries. I've not had a bike accident but have had at-home PT. The tech was the prettiest little thing ever, short and very knowledgeable but meaner than 7 hells on 3 wheels. She made me do stuff I didn't want to do cuz it hurt really bad...she didn't care. A few months later I was sooo glad she did and thanked her. A couple years later my wife fell and broke her hip and also had at-home PT. Guess who showed up? My wife wasn't happy since she had observed my episode, my answer was "have fun honey" as I walked out the door.  ;D

Glad your on the mend and your sense of humor is intact. Sometimes it seems like everyone is diabetic! Good or bad, my numbers high or low don’t seem to have much effect on how I feel or operate, but couple them with a stressful high heat situation that could change things.

My had an encounter with a deer some 20 years ago which didn’t total my bike but I found I had $3,000 coverage for extras that came in handy hopefully you have something similar.

WOW!!!!   So sorry to hear.  Very painful injuries.  I did the same thing in 1998 with similar injuries.  After treatments and therapy I had no lasting symptoms.   Hope he has a similar outcome.   My thoughts and prayers for him and his family.  Geez....I hate to see him have to go thru this.
