Title: LOUDER after valve adjustment? Is this normal?
Post by: Draeger on June 19, 2025, 05:46:53 PM
Hey fellas,

My left side valves had a persistent tick in them that was just there, not too loud. I adjusted the valves today - a couple exhaust valves were tight... not a problem, I set them according to the manual.

Now that left side is even louder?

I made a video so you all can tell me what you think - right side is quiet.

The other thing I noticed was that two of the three vacuum hoses going to the first and second carbs on the left side were off. I put them back on. Would that change the sound?

If the change is related to the adjustment, you probably missed something. Go back and do it again. If you had that sound before and after, check for an exhaust leak.

Hint. If you had to turn the adjuster screw more than a “hair” you probably adjusted a valve on the wrong top dead center

Thank you so much guys!

I followed your advice and went over it again. Only took off the left side valve cover, then checked TDC on #1 with a flashlight ... went through the whole procedure in the manual... and sure enough... One of the lifters on the left side was very loose - maybe I forgot to double check it, maybe I didn't tighten it down... I don't know.

Much quieter now!

So appreciated :)

You do know there are two top dead centers in a firing sequence, and you can only adjust the valves on one of them. The exhaust TDC is NOT right one.

Also, if a vacuum hose off of one of the intake tubes has a hole in it, it can make the same kind of noise.

Just went through this myself and I had the exact same sound. Problem was I had the wrong TDC, I didn't know it made a difference. I assumed TDC was TDC only once in a cycle. Had to redo the valve adjustment, not a big deal but annoying. I was use to do 2 stroke valves not 4 stroke valves.

I had vacuum hoses off of three of the carbs and had somehow messed up one of the valves on the left side ... now it's all fixed and runs like a dream. Amazing what happens when you really pay attention  :P

New Valk owner here... On the yamaha cruisers, I have it is very accepted that you never touch the valves. Even though the manual recommends checking every sixteen thousand miles. What is the consensus with the Valkyrie community regarding adjusting valves? Absolutely, a must do or something you just leave alone and don't bother with?
