Title: New handlebars - How to lengthen electricals???
Post by: Nico on March 13, 2009, 10:53:02 AM
If you needed to lengthen the wires when adding new handlebars, how would you go about it?

Rewire the whole line?

Splice (solder) in an added length?

What say you???

I soldered in extensions for my Tach & speedo when I relocated them to the bars. If I recall the tach had 17 wires and the speedo 4.

Since your talking about your switch controls I don't see why you couldn't solder in some extra length there also.
Black Heat Shrink Tubing is a good thing too.

Black shrink wrap and double check which way you're routing as you do it.

Splice and solder,  two tips-
 shrink wrap goes on  first
stagger your splices- there are a lot of wires and if you cut them at the same spot you will have a very thick cable in one place.

I did it last summer with 4 inches of extension.  I only needed to do the right side as I was able to reroute the left side without problems.

Hope this helps.
