Title: Side Cover Tab Post by: Hef on March 19, 2009, 07:27:16 AM I know I have seen this before on the tech board, but did not find anything when I did a search. The tab that the right (front tab) side cover hooks to apparently has broken off. Note: it is not the tab on the side cover but where the side cover hooks to the framework. Anyone have a fix for this? TIA. Hef

I took my cover off and figured an approx. location for the rivet made a mark then drilled a hole about the size of the rivet shank in the center cover section. Don't know the exact name for the rivet, we called them body rivets, got them at the hardware store. Its basiclly a rivet with a big flange, comes as showen in first pic. I removed the stud from the flange, showen in pic. 2. I then roughed up the inside of the cover so JB Weld would adhere to the cover. Put a coat of JB down then pressed the rivet in position and coated the flange part of the rivet with JB,then let it set overnight. It works great for me, I did both sides. Just remember when taking cover off pull cover from tangs then to push forward to release. Pic. 3 finished cover.

Works fine.

Take about a 2" strip and apply 1 side to the center section and the other side to the side cover. Apply where the side cover overlaps the center cover, just to the outside of the broken off tab location. I did this on the road while having an antifreeze issue over 2 years ago and it works EXCELLENT to this day!!!! Never have to worry about breaking off the tab again! In fact I've considered cutting the tab off of the other side and doing the same thing there! I now carry a few strips of adhesive backed velcro in my saddle bag for repairs, either temporary or permanent, that stuff is amazing!!!
