Title: HELP: Need new Rear Brake Caliper
Post by: DrewDanube on May 04, 2011, 04:14:14 PM
Hey all...LONG time, no post.  Been too busy working (and riding).
We had to pull the rear wheel to re-pack the splines and in the process managed to permanently get the pin that holds the rear brake pads to the caliper affixed to the caliper itself.  We're twisting off allen wrench ends!
New Caliper time...
however, it appears the entire sub-assembly and a best price thus far of 297 is a bit...high.  Any suggestions on where to go or even better does anyone have a used one I could buy?
Thanks
Andrew

There's usually some on eBay, but you might take it to a machine shop to have them remove it.

Is a caliper a caliper?
In other words, would a caliper off a 1997 Valkyrie tourer just pop right on?

I believe so.  I recommend you do a fiche comparison.  Check part numbers.

 * is a caliper a caliper...

Interstate calipers are different from STD/Tourer calipers... they have smaller pistons...

Calipers are only about $25 dollars from Pinwall... they're usually perfect after you
clean them up and replace the rubber...

It is my understanding that one from a 97 will NOT fit a 99 to 2001 interstate.
There were some deign changes made.
I would get a parts guy to verify before bought one from ebay or elsewhere.
And then make sure the seller REALLY knows what it is off of.
That is my .02 and I'm sticking to it!

I put a rear wheel (w/rotor) off of a '98 standard on my '99 standard and had to shim the rotor out to get it to center in the caliper and not rub.  Some suggested here the rotors are different.  The bike the wheel came off of was rear-ended way back when it was new so it's no telling if it was put together with the correct year/model parts when it was rebuilt.

Point being: there are some differences in the rear brake components. Not sure if the calipers themselves are different though, but you're in the right spot for the answers.

How about a caliper from a 2000 C/CT model on a 2000 IS?  Is it the same caliper, just different color?

I'm guessing that all Interstate rear calipers are different from all STD/Tourer calipers... they don't
seem all that different when you're holding each in your hand, but by the time you tear them down and
you got one of each piston in your hand... they seem real different...  :)

Pinwall lists the specific type of bike each part came from... I've gotten numerous front and rear
calipers from Pinwall, never cared what year, just Tourer or Interstate... they've always been
just right.

Went ahead and ordered a 99 I/S caliper from Pinwalls.  Seem like good folks.  50 bucks w/ 2 day air is ALOT more palatable than a new one!
