Title: Going AWOL for a while.
Post by: bigguy on September 22, 2011, 06:42:17 AM
Looks like I'm going to be AWOL for a few weeks. The details can be found in the last entry on my blog, which will also be on hiatus for a few weeks. I'm looking forward to getting past this and getting back on line, then back on the road. You guys ride safe.

Sounds bad but could always be worse. Hopefully the disease is contained and they can dispose of it. I had a friend who had the procedure you're talking about  done about three years ago and he is still doing great so keep an optimistic attitude. Prayers and best wishes. Hef

Very sorry to hear the news but also glad you caught this before it spread.  That makes it very treatable.

My good neighbor across the street had what sounds like the same procedure for bladder cancer.  He was pretty much fully recovered in 6 months and feels great, says the reconstruct isn't noticeable - new plumbing is fine.

My father-in-law also had bladder cancer about 5 years ago.  They took half his bladder and rebuilt a little more on it and he feels great as well.

So, this is very recoverable, although scary.  Prayers heading up your way for a complete recovery!

Yeowch! Hoping everything goes smooth and well, and that we're able to share some stew again in a little under a year's time!

Heck, I might even be hungry for stew again by then!

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers. Serk, count me in for the stew. I found a couple of them that were pretty good. Especially the one with the stuffed skunk out front. I still wonder if some of that critter wasn't in the stew.

I got home yesterday (Tuesday) about 4:30 pm. I can't lift anything. I'm still so sore it was all I could do to drag my cut up carcass into the house, which left it to Mrs. Sharon to do EVERY thing else. So, as I basically sat on the couch watching TV, still using my hands to delicately hold in my innards at every deep breath or cough, Sharon spent the rest of the evening hauling in stuff from the car getting supper and cleaning up what messes the cats had left.
We'd left them with sufficient litter pans, food and water to hold out for the 7 to 10 days we'd expected to be gone. One of them had managed to dart unseen through the door to our bedroom, which we closed to keep off limits, as we left. This rotund ball of gray stripped fur goes by the ridiculous nom de plume Skinny Minnie. It has been many years since she could fit in her prom dress. I'd taken to calling her Fatty Patty, however Mrs Sharon nixed that name. So even as we watch her waddle down the hall, as wide or tall as she is long, we still call her Skinny Minnie.
It's amazing how she can get that much fat moving so fast so quickly, but she can. And of course she picked the worst possible time to do it, dashing unseen through a door that would remain closed for the next seven days.
As we opened the bedroom door, headed for blessed slumber, a much more svelte Skinny Minnie zipped between out legs in a mad dash to the feeder and water dish. It became quickly obvious that we would not be sleeping in our bed this night.
Settling down in the guest bedroom, I lay in bed with the Yorkie friends who'd been keeping had returned a few hours earlier. We have a rug topped with towels on the bed, that are his bed. Sharon finished her chores and came to bed. Leaving her and the Yorkie, I went to the bathroom to start swapping and cleaning the various bags and tubes that will be my constant companions for the next 4 weeks. Just as I was finishing up, I heard a distressed, 'Oh no! BINKY!" I guess there was just too much change and too much excitement for that little bladder. Sharon had stepped out of bed for just a second to grab another blanket. Binky stepped off his bed for some other business. On to the second guest bedroom, and our third bed for the night. Thus passed our first evening home.

I won't tell you any jokes for a while, or at least until the stitching has a chance to hold all those innards in.

I guess we should be sending you some Fabreeze for Skinny Minnie's handiwork!

Prayers from Arlington for a quick recovery.

Mark

I'm glad your back home. I hope for a speedy recovery for you. I had hernia surgery Mon. a week ago and it was pretty painful till day before yesterday. Take it easy, and take the pain meds as instructed. I noticed if I tried to play superman it was hard to get the pain back under control.
Praying for you, Matt

Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers guys. It really means a lot.
Doing really well. Especially considering I've been gutted like a carp. :o 34 staples holding my innards in.
The tubes won't come out for 4 weeks, and until then doc doesn't want me doing anything other than walk. No lifting, no carrying, nothing that putts any strain on my abdomen. That means I basically sit here on the couch watching TV while Sharon runs herself to death. She hasn't stopped since we got home Tuesday evening. That's tough. Fortunately, I think she's on top of everything so maybe today she can relax a little. I'm hoping to be able to take a short ride, 8 weeks post surgery. Considering how this could have gone, I am extremely blessed.

Do what the doctor says and take comfort in the fact that you have two good women waiting for you. (one is a fat lady)
