Title: Steering Nut Tool
Post by: Chattanooga Mark on February 17, 2012, 07:04:59 PM
What's a good source to purchase the socket needed to adjust the steering head nut?

Thank You,

Mark

I'd just ask to borrow one. Many have made their own or had someone make one for them.

I'm not near the shop right now so can't tell you the size, but I made one from a deep well impact wrench socket. Don't try cutting notches in it with a hack saw, you need an air driven die grinder with a cutting wheel on it. Cost was well under $10.

stainless steel .... $39, that includes shipping to 50 states

I'll have to send you the seller's info through Email or PM to observe the board policy. Since you don't list your Email address, if you email me I'll send you the seller's info.

Daniel Meyer (http://lifeisaroad.com/) has used the item and in an earlier post said it works fine here (http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,31752.msg292622.html#msg292622).

Not sure if the size is the same, but that sure looks like an old chevy 4x4 hub nut tool.

For my vtx 1300, I just took the locknut to Tractor Supply and looked for a 3/4" deep well farm socket that fit close enough. You don't need much torque and I had the adapters to get from 3/4 drive down to my 3/8" torque wrench. It was less than $20 and now I have a 1 11/16" socket sitting in my tool box. I didn't even have to grind on it.

I have the Honda socket too for that, must have bought it 5ish years ago, for around $35.  Same piece now is 100 bucks!
