Title: New to the world of Valks
Post by: deacon on June 01, 2009, 01:07:37 PM
Hello guys and gals,
Just wanted to introduce myself.  Over the weekend, I traded my VTX1300 for a burgundy/cream '98 Valk Tourer.  I will always love my VTX, it was great to me.  I wish I could afford both.  On the other hand, my wife has become increasingly interested in riding with me and I think the Valk will work better.  So far I LOVE it!!!  Aside from it's inherent beauty, this bike has a smooth power that's hard to describe.  I know I know, I'm preaching to the choir.   :cooldude:

My first post wouldn't be complete without a stupid question:  Is there a source for finding bolt sizes on the bike?  I want/need to replace the Honda windshield bolts (shield to the mounting bracket, not mounting bracket to the bike) as well as the rear passenger seat bolt (once i get the broken one out, that's a longer story  :tickedoff: ).  Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks everyone!  I look forward to learning from you all and contributing where I can.

Windshield bolts, that sandwich the shield between the inner and outer brackets is 6mm.  Not sure of the thread pitch.  Depending on which one it is, they are 3 different lengths if I remember right.

The bolt that holds the rear of the passenger seat down is also 6mm. (6x20)

For bolts that are visible, like you are referring to, I usually order them from Honda.  They are shiny chrome, and match the rest of the bolts.  They cost a few bucks each, which is more than they cost at the hardware store, but they aren't THAT expensive in the end.

If you want a reference, go to http://www.hdlparts.com (http://www.hdlparts.com) and use the parts finder to look at the microfiche for exact parts....and part numbers.

Deacon,

Welcome to the VRCC and Valkyrie ownership.   :cooldude:  I made a post on the VTXOA regarding your pennance  (PAVTXER) you can read it there.   Regarding parts and thread sizes etc etc,.... you may be familiar with HDL/DLPs on line store front and the stock parts software for the VTX, which also has Valkyrie parts look up capability as well.   Go here...   http://www.hdlparts.com/ (http://www.hdlparts.com/) and then select parts finder and look up the part you are needing for your bike.

And, if you send me a PM with your address, I might be able to get you a CD version of the Service Manual.   ;)

When you go to the parts fische, the part # often has the bolt size in the description. Then you go to Ace hardware and buy a SS or chrome bolt for much less $$$.

I did the same switch, 1300C VTX to Valkyrie two years ago. The Valkyrie is a two up bike and my wife loves the rear seat, the VTX was not as good for that. Welcome to the club.

WARNING buying a Valkyrie can cause you to spend all your disposable income on chrome. BTW I was at my local Honda dealer and Honda is closing out on (I understand that as no longer making) the chrome backrest inserts at half price.
