Title: Intermitent Power Loss Above 3,000 RPMs
Post by: Big Ed on July 26, 2012, 11:57:23 AM
My fat lady has been experiencing Intermitent Power Loss Above 3,000 RPMs when doing 65+ MPH on wide open highways.

I'm trying to go thru a process of elimination to troubleshoot the problem.

At first I thought it was bad gas. But went thru several tank fulls during the ride up and back from Inzane and still had the same problem on and off.

I've been going thru the possible causes as follows:

Fuel Delivery? It runs fine and has plenty of power at lower speeds. Solid acceleration and revs above 4,000 without a problem. Could it be it needs Petcock service? Are Petcock issues "all or nothing"?

Vaccuum issue? I was thinking of doing the de-smog. Then I read this link about this problem occuring after a de-smog. http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,42624.0.html (http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,42624.0.html)

Overheating? The coolant temp indicator hasn't turned on (but I'm not sure if it is working correctly) and the radiator fan hasn't been turning on when this has happened (which it does during heavy stop and go traffic).

Electrical issue? Not sure, but I dont think so.

Its a 2001 with 18,000 miles on it. I was going to order a de-smog kit and petcock service kit anyways. But wanted to check with you guys first and get your thoughts.

Thanks, Ed...

Hopefully just the petcock. It's not all or nothing with the petcock. Good luck.

I think it's the petcock because it seems to be a common problem with these bikes as they get older. Also do a desmog to get rid of any potential vacuum leaks as well. I would go with a pingle manual petcock with the danmark shut off valve. I've had it on mine for a year or so and don't know why I didn't do it earlier.

Give me a call if you have any questions.

Check for a kink in the fuel line. Don't ask me how I know :uglystupid2:

Agree with the others. Fuel delivery.

Petcock...do the vacuum leak down test.

Tank vent. Make sure it is not kinked or obstructed.

Fuel filter (least likely).

We had a LOT of these at Inzane (as we always do).
