Title: timing belts Post by: Jim Ross on June 07, 2009, 05:04:04 PM I know the recommended change is at 50K miles or thereabouts, but has anyone found a GREAT price (less than $45 ea) for these oem belts?
How about Gates or Napa...is the quality equal to oem? I once heard of an older GoldWing going over 90K before changing the belts....but I would not stretch it quite that far, better safe than sorry! Title: Re: timing belts Post by: MP on June 07, 2009, 05:12:06 PM I thought it was 100,000 miles.
Title: Re: timing belts Post by: alph on June 07, 2009, 05:14:01 PM You know, I’ve seen those belts on Ebay and have often thought about getting them. Question is, are they junk? Should I just order some from the local (rip me off again) Honda shop?

My original belts were replace at 140,000. I'll be putting on the 2nd set in another 40,000 miles. I used the NAPA belt on the 1st one, will probably use them again. http://www.jkozloski.com/generic_parts.htm (http://www.jkozloski.com/generic_parts.htm) Title: Re: timing belts Post by: Dave Weaver on June 07, 2009, 05:31:35 PM I just replaced mine about a month ago, and they had 36,000 miles on them. I replaced them due to age, 12 years, and not mileage. I used the Gates belts and quality seems about same as OEM. The originals were probably OK, but what price is peace of mind?

Replaced due to age (1998 Valkyrie) and not mileage (only 16,300 miles, still breaking her in). Title: Re: timing belts Post by: franco6 on June 07, 2009, 09:20:46 PM thanks Dave. i bought those gates on e bay too and was wondering if it was a wise choice.have not heard from any one about them.when i get a minute i ll install them ,was waiting to get the 6 trigger wheel but i don t think i llgo that route. the valk has 50,750 miles .no rush, just peace of mind!
Title: Re: timing belts Post by: Daniel Meyer on June 08, 2009, 05:07:05 AM These belts are not fragile. Inspect them at 100k...if there's wear on the teeth or the backs replace them. If there's wear on the backs replace the tensioners too.
