Thanks to Valkpilot for his suggestion, found a gold wing 1500 final drive with the shock mount cracked, picked it up for $30. Pressed out the spline out of the ring gear, and pressed the bad one out of the Valk final drive, installed and worked perfect. This is another final drive, my original ate a bearing.

Also got the hub and it looks new also, one more step towards getting mine back on the road.

That's new for sure.

It will be interesting as to the reliability of the fix.

Mileage is 74,000. I had one of the main bearings go in the final drive, metal went into the gears and scarred them up very badly. I picked up a used one, but splines were bad, I  disassembled it and every thing internal is fine, all the clearances and back lash are with in recommend settings. So looks like I will have a good drive. Going  to rebuild the original later for a spare, but it is going to need gears and bearings.

Wow, didn't know the hub would press out.  That make much more sense than changing the gear set.

Grumpy, check the end of the spline that goes into the bearing that's in the case. I tried that same fix, but the spline shaft from the goldwing was a smaller diameter than the case bearing's inside race.

The spline shaft I was using was from a '94 wing, but I thought all the wing ring gear part numbers were the same. Been a while since I did it, so I could mis-remember....

I miked the old one, and the new one. Both were the same.  I just finished assembling the unit, gear lash etc came out right to factory specs.  Looks like I have a good final drive now. Forgot, 2000 Goldwing Se is where it came from.

That's great, I'll remember that, got a couple of 'wing final drives in the shop, and pressing that shaft isn't a problem.

Now, if I could just remember what I saw that was different....  :uglystupid2:

The parts breakdown does not show the ring gear and spline hub as separate parts. How did you discover it was only a press fit. This also means that all that torque is transferred from the ring gear to the drive flange thru a "press fit part".....is it key'ed or anything to resist the radial slippage........

Valkpilot told me about how they had done it. The spline hub has splines where it is pressed into the ring gear. Not going to slip.

Was any heat used to remove or insert the spline sleeve?

What about the O-ring carrier.

No heat, I did put the spline in the freezer over night before pressing it in, made it a little easier
to press in, still took about 6 tons on the press to bottom it out.

the one in the gold wing spline was the same, so did not change it.

the gold wing 1500 was only made from 1988-2000 inclusive, so if you got a final drive out of a 2001 GW it had to be an 1800.  So, which one did you use?

How much pressure to get it out?

I have a 20 ton press, I would say about 10 to break it loose, the splines have a taper, so once it moves, it comes out fairly easy.

The one we did was almost a year ago.  I'm not sure how many mile have been put on since then, but there have been no problems that I know of.

Not on the one that Valkpilot refers to, either.  Ambient temperature for removal and replacement.

I used a 17.5 ton press and it didn't even wheeze.

Great news for sure, I have a final drive with badly worn splines and will be rounding up GW final drive for the spline donor.

Is there an update on how well this is working? Did you use any type of lubricant or thread lock when pressing the spline section back in?

Did not use any locking compound. The only thing I did was put the spline in the freezer overnight to shrink it some. It was still tight pressing in.
