Title: Gun/Pistol Safe
Post by: Bladedog on June 19, 2009, 08:31:44 AM
For those who keep a handgun close by at home, what safe do you recommend?  Although there's no small children in my home anymore, I still want it locked up when I'm not home, but I want to be able to get to it in an emergency.

Handgun is a Ruger .357 with 4" barrel which I pick up on Monday.  I plan on getting a 9mm also (when California's hilarious "one gun per month" period has expired)  :uglystupid2:

And.... anyone got a safe they wanna sell cheap?  ;)

Blade I store my handgun in a lock box with a five button symplex lock similar to the one on the link. The lock is programable so you can choose the button combination you want. In my case I push three buttons and its open. Inside is a Glock 36 45ACP and a high powered tatical flashlght. There are several other types of lock boxes including electronic ones that will do a real good job as well...

Thanks.  Good call on the flashlight, wouldn't have thought of that.

Nice weapon, BTW.  :cooldude:

Here is one I'm looking at.  Seems to have decent enough reviews and is on CA's approved secure container list.

I use a lockbox with a Simplex type lock as above, but mine is made by a local guy that goes to the gun shows around here...

Whatever you use, practice opening it in the dark from bed... And, IMHO, don't go for the fancy new ones that are electronic and use your finger prints... Use something simple and mechanical, not electronic... Murphy's law, the time something's going bump in the night is the night the battery will be dead...

Oh, and I have a Springfield Armory Compact XD .45 with a slide mounted light on it, and Trijicon tritium nite sights in the lockbox...  :cooldude:

I have two lockboxes with Simplex locks.  Both are coded the same and can be opened in total darkness.
Very reliable.

Inside one box is a Glock 27 with tritium sights and extra magazines.  A  three cell Magnalight is close by. The other box holds a Ruger .357 with 125gr HP's, extra speedloader, a Surefire flashlight, and six 4/0 buck 12 gauge shells for my Stoeger 12 gauge double coach gun hanging on the wall 10 feet away.

Did you get a DNA test before you resistered your guns?

Lol... right on, Momz... here in Cali DNA stands for Do Not Arm.....

Don't EVEN get me started on California's astounding gun laws.... and what a misnomer that is... gun LAWS ... like a LAW is going to stop someone who.... wait for it... DOESN'T OBEY THE LAW!

There see I got started anyway.  haha

I have a few  placed strategically throughout the house, some in nightstand drawers, behind bed posts, and some in safes and some even behind a wall hanging (someone had a picture of that picture storage/access awhile back).  I also have one of these safes... the simplex lock kind that I have yet to use.....   (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41DRQNTY2QL._SL500_AA280_.jpg).  I just can't seem to figure out where or how I want to put and install it.  I think it would have to be in a closet above the door to permit hiding it (prevent theft) but also permit access.  For those that have that Simplex safe pictured, where do you mount yours?

John - Mine's similar to yours in layout. Mine came with a secure mounting bracket that I bolted to the nightstand by the bed. It's not foolproof, a determined thief with time and a crowbar could pry it off, but quick accessibility was high on my priority list. If I'm going outta town I take the pistol outta that safe and put it in the big safe.

I.E. The bedside safe is more to keep little hands safe as opposed to keeping it from being stolen...
