I give up. For two years I have been chasing the problem of finding neutral when the bile is HOT HOT like the fan running. Cant move the foot shift lever from first to neutral when stopped unless I turn off the motor, then it will go in. The bike is fine until I get into stop and go traffic. I tried oil changes with different brands and weights. New clutch lever, pivot pin, and slave cylinder. I replaced the foot shift lever seal but its still a little sloppy. So much for the cheep tries. I don't think it's the clutch because it completely disengages and I can roll the bike without any drag, but I can't move the foot lever up from first to neutral or it will go to second and down to first, no neutral. I think the tranny is worn. Only when hot, shifts fine and no problem finding neutral with normal riding.
Has anyone had the same problem and fixed it?

Learn to live with it. That's a natural idiosyncrasy of the engine/transmission.
Shift while still moving, when the bike is stopped, due to the back cut dogs, the transmission is difficult to shift.
It's the nature of the beast.
Try a different oil. Some have found a different oil has helped them shift the transmission.
There is nothing wrong with your transmission and nothing wrong with the shift linkage, what little there is of that.

I don't know Rickey. The bike is old with lot of miles, and I never had a problem for the first 15 years and 125k miles.

It is smart to keep it in gear while in stop and go traffic. If you have someone not stopping behind you,you might be able to get out of harms way but if in neutral there is little to no chance. JMO

Don't give up, there are Valkyries with way more miles than that without shifting trouble. Three of mine have more miles than that. Do you perchance have a heel/toe shifter installed? It's a well known issue with that device that it often wears the shift forks excessively due to higher pressure in the shifting movement. Many here will refute that statement, but dealers over the years have been known to refuse warranty service for shifting problems if they see one installed. Some Wing riders have reinstalled the OEM shifter before taking the bike in for repair of such problems, only to be told it's not covered. Reason....when the engine is pulled and the case split, the abnormal wear patterns give it away. It may not be the cause of your problem, I'm just posting this as food for thought. Personally I've never cared for a H/T shifter, having nothing to do with the results mentioned above, just don't care for them.

No John. Bike has the original foot shift lever. I going to over to the Gold Wing board. Maybe I might get get an idea there why heat has an effect on 1500 shifting.

Jruby, I used to know a Ruby family both here in Orlando and in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Wondering if there's a connection. In this smaller world nowadays, one never knows.

No John. I was shooting a snub nose S+W 38 revolver at golf balls and I told a shooting buddy that I got the load from Jack Ruby. It's the one he used on Lee Harvey Oswald. The handle stuck.

I can relate to all the square cut gear shifting issues everyone on this forum has. This is just my experience so take it for what it's worth. My shifter seal was leaking and it ordered a seal. I Had it at my mechanic's getting a new front tire mounted. While it was on the lift it asked him to put the seal on.He marked the position and when he reinstalled the shifter lever he installed it one spline off . So it was slightly lower . I ended up liking it that way. It made it much easier to up shift .

for whatever it is worth, I've had Jap' bikes all my life and have yet to meet one with a wet clutch that easily shifts into neutral, especially standing still.
Common [wet clutch] Remedies: 1. down shift to 1st while moving (mentioned above), when I say moving I don't mean downshifting to 1st at 25+MPH, rather as you are coming to a stop, 2. Shifting from 1st to 2nd on our Valks can sometimes be met with neutral or a "clunk", pull out your RPMs higher while shifting from 1st to 2nd and be a tad more assertive on the shift peg, and finally 3. When I went from an organic 10w-40 to a synthetic 20w-50 (Amsoil) my finding neutral and up shifting from 1st to 2nd issues didn't completely go away, but there was a noticeable improvement
