Is there a separate way to check Trans oil or is it integral with the engine oil?

I thought it was with the engine oil like most bikes and I couldn't find anything in the manual to state different but I ran into another Valkyrie owner yesterday and he talked of checking his trans oil but couldn't remember how or where on the bike he checked it.  (His bike was in the shop and he was looking at mine)
I did a quick search here but couldn't find anything.  (I'm not the best "search" user)

On our Valkyries, theres just oil.  The oil is for the cylinder and heads and its also for the transmission....same oil.  Either there was a misunderstanding, or that dude knows not what hes talking about.

He was probably referring to the rear drive unit.

Both responses above are correct.

Engine oil is same as trans oil.  It all comes from the same spot.

Rear drive is separate oil.  (Gear oil.)  There's a fill hole near the top of the rear drive housing.  Fill to the edge of the fill port, being careful not to overflow all over your garage floor, and you're done.  Make sure bike is sitting level for this.

Gas up and go ride!!   cooldude

Are you referring to the little chrome "hat" that sits on top of the rear drive unit?

He was probably referring to the rear drive unit.

Thanks guys,

Yeah, I thought he was thinking of that also.  He did point out the drive unit but he said something like "to fill it works the same way on a lower unit on a boat, you fill it from the bottom until it comes out of the top.(???)

He said he owned a few bikes and I think he may be getting these confused with the Valk.  He does seem to be a pretty good guy (I mean come on, he rides a Valk and thinks it's the greatest bike ever!!) and doesn't come across as bragging or anything.

No it's not the little hat on the top. That's the vent. It's the 17mm cast cap about half way between the hat and the drain plug. Fill to top of hole or until it starts to pour out.

Dont do anything like this (above)  Its best to replace the oil when the drive unit is removed from the bike, or at least when the wheel is off.  After a complete draining, just add axactly 150cc.  It WONT overflow anywhere and you wont have a big mess to clean up.  BTW dont "crank" on the filler plug when you tighten it.....a tad past finger tight is all it needs, its cheap cast aluminum and it will tear up if you gorilla the thing tight.

BigMac,

I ask because I topped mine off just last weekend, and I used that cast cap. Question 2: I'm assuming Honda didn't design it to lubricate the rim? I filled it (didn't take a whole lot) and went for a 60 mile ride. When I stopped, the black "dust cover" between the rim and the rear drive. Any ideas?

Im guessing you had the bike on the side stand......removed the filler cap and poured in as much as you could until started overflowing then recapped.  If this is correct you are over filled and it probably splashed out the vent.  150cc is all it takes.  If youo put 150cc in while on the sidestand, it wont overflow.  Nice and neat......or better yet while on the workbench whenever you have the drive removed at tire changes and spline lubes
