The wife and I will be driving from Ohio to Alabama and we are staying in a condo on the beach.  I would like to take a handgun for protection.  I do not have a CCW.   I would like it for when we are in the condo and for on the road.  What advice does anyone have one where to keep it while driving?  In the condo?  and what to do with it while traveling around the condo?  My car is a hatchback also.

Thanks

Lets say I get pulled over because my car looks like one that commited a crime.  Lets say they also search it and find a gun under the seat.  What happens?

Each state is different.  Here in Nevada you can have it loaded in your car with no permit.  Other states are not the same.  I frequently violate California law.  I have a permit but California dosent recognize many.

Most states you will go to jail and the vehicle will be impounded.........    If you don't want that to happen, get a CCW, or leave the gun at home.........

Leave it at home.  If the cops find it RJ is right and it will cost you a small fortune for a defense attorney, I wouldn't risk it with a P.D. although maybe 5 in a 100 are really good.
If you leave it in your room housekeeping may find it and take it or report you to the authorities.

BTW I am a  gun owner and have been around firearms since I was 10 years old. I have even qualified as Marksman 1st Class & as Sharpshooter.

My current weapon of choice.
Sans safety. My finger is my safety.

Put it in yer luggage in the back, like Joe said ya might as well have a stick. It will do you good in the Condo. I'm sure you could look it up on line to see what each state allows. Your biggest problem will be your home state of Ohio. Some states allow it in the glove box, others the trunk.

or...you can look at it like this, better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6  coolsmiley

Federal law, 18 U.S.C. § 926A, specifically permits a person to transport a handgun through any state so long as 1) the handgun and ammunition are in the trunk, 2) the firearm is unloaded, and 3) the person is legally allowed to possess he handgun in the state where the trip started and the state where the trip ends.  "In the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console."  I would offer no guarantee that every state or local police officer knows and understands the federal law and that so long as you complied with the federal law you could not possibly be arrested.  Finally, I understand that an unloaded handgun locked in a container does not serve much of a function for providing for self defense.

I offer no advise as to whether you may legally possess the handgun in Ohio or at the condo in Alabama (the prerequisite for the application of the federal statute).

I think it fall under illeagal search and seizure cause they had a 'hunch' that your car looks like a suspect car. I would think that all cops would try this, imho. Or I could just be off my rocker!  uglystupid2 Depends when your trip is but might as well get your CCW, it'll only take a month to get, at least mine did.

What's next, world peace?   Wink

IMHO try to Drive the speed limit

Make sure your lights including brake lights work before driving off

You do not have to consent to a search of the vehicle

For cryin out loud dont have anything suspicious in plain sight

I dont carry and dont know the gun laws but I know something about reasons folks get pulled over.

Go online and look up alabama carry and concealed laws. Someone on this site has posted the link before

Have a great time and never underestimate a good stick, exp the sharp ones

I've been a gun enthusiast for over 67 years and a NRA Life Member for quite some time.

To carry across state lines is your decision.  Gun laws vary widely and so does the attitude of LEO's.
Indiana has decent firearm carry laws and I'm a CCW but I can't give you much advice except to say what others have said.  If you can't get to it you might as well carry a stick but if you can, be prepared for some real s--- if you're stopped.

Unfortunately, the time that you might need it most is traveling.  I'd say no.

Great advice.  Don't give anyone a reason to pull you over.

Also, don't give anyone a reason to arrest you if you are pulled over.  A pleasant, respectful attitude can't but help.  Having your license and insurance out the window in your left hand with your right hand on the wheel can't but help.  Having no outstanding warrants can't but help.  Even if, by the letter of the law, you shouldn't have a gun, if you are not perceived as a threat or hoodlum you are probably going to be OK.

If you are a letter of the law guy, an inexpensive, lockable plastic case shouldn't be more than $20-$25.00 and comes in handy when taking a pistol while flying commercial airlines.  I have a fanny-pack that looks completely innocent to the uninitiated.  The padded large compartment is where the Glock 23 spends most of its life.  Something similar will be available at most nice gun stores.  Get one or the other or both, put the gun in it, and take it.  You are doing it to protect the lives of your wife and you.  Personally, I don't see where there is a good enough argument against it.

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

Ted Nugent says the 2nd Amendment is his right to carry.  I like that one.  A lot.

Live in Alabama. Don't know if we recipricate with Ohio or not. However, when traveling I carry without a CCW permit. Have had to draw it one time and thankfully the thug that wanted to practice road rage by stopping in front of me in a turn lane and coming back to my vehicle was finally persuaded to find someone else to try and pick on. Without a barrell in his face I think he might have tried to violate my rights. If I hadn't had the S&W I had a 20oz. Estwing within reach. I swift blow to the nostrile would have been effective as well.

about 10 yrs ago BEFORE I got my Texas Concealed Carry License my wife and I were going to take a long trip but still be in Texas.  I called the Texas Hyway Patrol and got an officer on the line and told him I was clean cut and about 50 yrs old and my wife and I were going on a long trip in Texas and would be carrying about $1,000 cash on me and I wanted to know if it was legal or not to carry a pistol with me.   He said it was a gray area that  you can carry a weapon if you are crossing 3 counties and are carrying a large sum of money on you and that it would be up to the officer if he arrested you for it.   I asked "I'm 50 yrs old and clean cut and am traveling through 3 counties with money and if YOU stopped me what would YOU do?"   He answered "I'd take you to jail".   nuff said for me.....ha

You can check out this site www.legallyarmed.com to find out if your State honors other State's CCW permits.

I'd find a different condo. If you need a gun at the condo your at the wrong place. I find Alabama to be a pleasant state to travel in and most people are not going to try to kill you.

Leave the gun at home and enjoy the trip without worries. I would say your more worried about carring the gun than getting ambushed or you wouldn't have even asked "What should I do".

ALABAMA is nice, especially the beach (they have a beach?) enjoy your vacation. (You may need a rifle to kill those giant Bubba Gump shirmp.)

An Ohio CCW is not honored by the State of Alabama; however, a Florida CCW is and Florida issues Non-Resident Permits.

Ohio does not reconize Al. permits but Tn and Ky does .  my advice is to get a cc permit and keep it up to date.
