One workaround depending on what you're doing: If you are trying to write to, or read from an SD card, it's always faster to remove it and put it in a card reader/writer. I have several different ones, a favorite is one by Iogear. see

I use 32GB cards, and load several of them with different MP3's - limited to 2000 per card in this Zumo.) This would apply to updating maps, MP3 files, waypoint files etc. I have not tried that for uploading routes but I suspect it should work if they can reside on the SD card rather than resident memory. Uploading routes - Garmin SNAFU'd when they replaced Mapsource with Basecamp. I went to myrouteapp.com but it's not as good as mapsource was.
