I wonder which politicians relative owns that company.  I would like to see the roads after a year to see the reflective quality and how much is lost due to black tires, oil and emissions. Each coat is pricey at $40,000 but each section of road takes two coats therefore approximately $80,000 per mile.

Someone is banking some cash.

Next will be white rubber tires

Obviously they have not discovered concrete instead of ..................

the labor cost too high compared to oil based asphalt, which also provided worst mpg compared to concrete.

a few yrs ago, that state wanted to ban all black vehicles from being sold there, for same reason heating up the climate.

Years ago, I got a wild hair to stain (paint) my sidewalks since they were aging and not looking too good (but I sure wasn't going to pay for new concrete).  I did a good job, and boy did they look great, for about 18 months when half of it came off and the spotty polka-dot look was far worse than I started with.  And the parts that didn't come off, would not come off for years.

And my sidewalks probably got a lot less use than LA streets will.

What complete nonsense.

Hey, if white streets are good for the environment, what about white people, and..?   Oh man, don't go there.......

You nay sayers are wrong. This white pavement has already been proven to work. AZ is looking into it too. Both light and heat reflect in a similar manner. Pavement temps are much cooler when painted white. In the last 40 years, our average nighttime lows have gone up more than 11 degrees due to heat absorption of concrete and pavement.

But Sandy, is this being done to save the pavement... or the earth?

Or maybe cooling (AC/electricity) costs?

But, there have been studies showing that the energy emissions to produce the coating is far higher than the coatings will supposedly negate.  Also, the light reflecting back into the air can cause a decrease in cloud cover.
Do these streets cause eyestrain, similar to snow blindness?  just curious on that.

Any one thought about motorcycle tires, even car tires on wet (rain) painted streets.

So stop putting down so much concrete and pavement. Really an easy fix.

Unless taxes are needed to pay for the increase in population?

The cooler pavement reduces the heat island effect which reduces cooling costs. Dirt roads are better than every other choice. Do we want that?

I wonder if a cost-benefit analysis was ever done before it started going on the roads, or whether the decision-making was, "Someone said it will reduce global warming climate change, so whatever the cost, we're doing it!"

I've noticed that the black sealcoat used in parking lots is far more prevalent in the US than in Canada, and while it looks terrific, boy does it make for a hot parking lot!  I wonder how the long-term cost of the white stuff compares to the cost of the black stuff.  Perhaps a case could be made that only white sealcoat is permitted, where sealcoat is used.
