My 99 IS radio will not come on.  Display goes thru normal startup display test and then stops on clock.  Allways starts at 1:00 then clock keeps time even though I cannot set it.

None of the buttons on the controller will get a response. Power-Mode switch has been punched and held hundreds of times but radio will not respond. Went thru service manual test for all power and switch functions and everything appears normal. I even chased the control power from the unit up to the switch and back and verified the switch is working.  voltage test between black and orange power on wires shows 7.5 volts open to 0 volts when power switch is closed.

I unplugged the switch cable and tested the unit using external contacts to short orange and black and it sill will not come on.  I purchased two other radios and they both have the same voltages and no start issues. Have cleaned the green and blue plugs and cannot see anything wrong.

Any ideas what is holding the power up function from working?

Are there any other grounds for the audio system I should check?

Constant power to red wire shows 12.6 and green/black wire from relay shows 12.5 so power supply checks. Green wire in green plug and radio chassis both show good chassis ground.

The last radio I purchased was from pinwall and they had a video of it working before they pulled it so I am about 90% sure issue is in my harness.

I have done resistance checks on the wires going between the radio plugs and controller plug and cannot find any shorts.

FOUND THE PROBLEM

With the help of my son we unplugged the radio and the controller from the harness and started checking the 9 conductors between the 9 pin controller plug and the blue radio plug. We checked continuity between the blugs and between the wires and ground.

Found the problem was not in the harness but a relay I had hooked up to the accessory power plug had got water in it and was impressing a 400 ohm short to the system.  From one end of the black control power wire to the blue plug was 740 ohm to ground and from the blue connector back to the controller was a 400 ohm to ground short so we new it was closer to the blue plug.  We traced the black wire using the wiring diagram and found it branched off to the switched Radio power for the CD player. The black wire powers the radio and accessory   power meant for the CD player that many people use for lights and other accessories.

I unplugged the connector I had to the black accessory plug and the radio system started working.

Any load on the assessor power plug can limit the ability of the radio controller to work.

I guess I now have three working radios.

Did it work intermittently and then quit?

Did you check the controller connection to the main wiring harness?

I could send you the splice block modification fix word document.

It works for displays that only show the fuel gauge and the rest of the radio is kaput.

No guarantee it will work for what your describing.

The splice block is taped up inside the main wiring harness  and subject corrosion over time. There are 20 wires in the splice block. If it is damaged from corrosion you cut the block out and splice the 20 wires into six separate splices. Its all detailed in my document including pictures.
PM me with your email and I'll send it to you.

This sounds very familar, but I'm thinking 3-4 years ago.

Do you have the owners manual? I scanned the radio controls, if you need a copy send me an email request ( gordonv1@NOTTHIStelus.net ).

Have you followed the wires from the control, from the radio, and insured all are plugged in?

The main ground for the unit is good and I worked the controls from both ends. I even unplugged the controller and manually shorted the power wires at the radio to simulate the control power switch and nothing happen. My next step is to effectively tear all the clear boots off the system and clean and inspect the harness real close to see if I can find a short. I plan to toothbrush clean all the backsides of the plugs to get ALL the dirt out.

There is something outside the radio preventing the power function and clock reset to work. As I must keep the blue plug attached to the radio to power it up I am thinking it is in the set of wires associated with the blue master plug.

I'm going to take apart the main controller and clean it anyway.

Send me the ground block rebuild details and I will consider it.

If I understand correctly, when it powers up the clock always come up at 1:00?  that sounds like you are losing the retained power that keeps the clock powered when you key up.  It would be similar to disconnecting the battery each time you key off.  Once it powers up, can you change the functions on the audio? i.e. AM, FM, CB, AUX?
