I have a 99 I/S and when I first picked it up a couple of years ago the fuel indication was pretty much dead nuts on when I had to switch to reserve.  The indication would start flashing about the same time as the engine started to stutter. 
Now I have to switch to reserve before that happens.

I am wondering if any one else has seen this.

I am thinking:  1) bent float arm
2) petcock screen blocked partially
3) float pot resistance bad.

Thoughts?

I'm with meathead, my gage is in full panic mode for many miles before reserve.

yeah mine is just the opposite.  It used to be very close which was a good thing but now I am cruising along fat dumb and happy and it starts to sputter away. Still have 2 bars showing.  Switch to reserve and she smoothes out.  Then a long way before the flashing panic mode.  I preferred it the other way.  Nothing (that I know of) has changed.

My 99 will do maybe 20 miles on flash then reserve.
Question might be are you putting same amount of fuel in tank after hitting hitting reserve? Would think same amount fuel as in past would be sending unit, less fuel would be petcock.

I think (after taking the tank off) if you plugged the sending unit in backwards (if that is even possible) it wouldn't work at all.  But I am not sure.  

I don't know how you bend the internal float, unless you had it out?  Did you?

My mileage is so consistent, I can depend on my trip meter, especially down near reserve, better than my gauge (I reset both at each fill-up).  And then I always reach up and reset one of them to 0 as soon as I go to reserve.... thinking 35 miles is all I can hope for.

Once I am down to two bars, acceleration, speed, bumps and leans, always has my gauge jumping back and forth from two bars to flashing, to two bars to flashing, then one bar to flashing, then constant flashing.... and probably at least 15 miles of constant flash, before I sputter the engine needing reserve.  Then I reset one tripmeter, again.  

The tail end of the Interstate gas gauge sucks IMHO.  So it starts flashing with 15-20 miles before reserve (and no bars left), then at reserve it has 1.1 gallons left..... so, all you get is flashing for the last, say, 40-50 miles?  That's why I like the tripmeter more than the gauge at the end.

This bikes are approaching 20 years, no big surprise that electronics will start to act it up...

But being a Honda, probably it can be fixed easily.

Ignoring the electronics. Standards need reserve early when the vacuum side of the petcock is failing. Order and replace the "cover set" on the petcock.

Cover set done? Now check the vacuum line. Snip 1/4" off each end and reinstall. Might help like chicken soup for a cold.

Last winter I did a full carb rebuild and cleaning. 
I did a full Desmog using the Red Eye kit.
Replaced the vacuum line to the Petcock.
Replaced all vacuum lines for the cruise control as well as the check valves.
Replaced the cover set and flow checked the petcock in all positions.

That is all of the work done in the area.  I can only think that perhaps the float was "damaged" in some way when the tank was inverted to remove the petcock.
Everything else seems to be on par.
I may have to remove the float and check it out.

I don't see how that could be.  The need for reserve setting is determined solely by level of fuel in the tank.  Vacuum leak will result in not enough fuel being passed to the carbs.  That has little or nothing to do with reserve setting.

A pinched vent hose can result in an apparent need for reserve setting as the amount of fuel pressure from the amount in the tank is reduced.  That problem will reveal itself in that less fuel than expected would be needed to refill the tank.

Have you seen that petcock on ebay right now? The tub on top looked cratered, holes throughout it.

Maybe yours also has holes in it?

You didn't remove the level sensor did you?
