I had put 15/50 Mobil 1 in and the tranny whine was quite loud.  I took off the chrome Kury covers and that helped, then put GN4 20/50 in hoping that would make a bigger difference but not noticeable.
Is it possible that a 10/40 would be quieter than a 20/50?
Maybe the thicker oil is suspended longer-- therefore more noise?

Just thinking.

The tranny noise is from cross cut gears. They used these for stronger gears to handle the Valk's torque. A whine is normal. Synthetic oil quiets it some but just get use to it.

I switched to 20/50 and overall I think the engine is quieter. That’s not a good oil for you if much of your riding is in the cold.

All my riding is 50 deg and up. I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Switched mine over 10 years ago to synthetic 20-50 when I made several trips out through
Yellowstone, Washington State, Oregon, Nevada, Utah. Glad I did as temps were triple digit.
Still get gear whine but overall like the protection and smooth quiet running.

I've tried several oils.

The quietest I ever ran was bike specific 10/40 Amzoil. (by far)

If it wasn't so spendy, I'da kept using it.

All 10-40s are not equal.

The 5-40 Shell Rotella T6 (diesel) may be the noisiest (but it's great oil and reasonably priced).  But when I dump a gallon in my bike, I don't think water would go in any faster.

Valks whine.  Get used to it.  Or stuff in some ear plugs.  Or run Cobra pipes.

BTW, some guys stuck sound deadening mat inside their trans covers. (Dynamat)

ear plugs work wonders and will save one $$$k of dollars later in life for hearing aids. that's if one's hearing is not past the aid of the hearing aids.

OK - so I searched about Amsiol (Metric) 10W40 motorcycle oil.  I could get it on line for about $52. plus shipping.   I asked my boss (a car buff) about Amsoil and he said they carried it right down the street.  I went to the parts store and they had quarts for $12.99 x 4, so I grabbed them (he can get gallons).
I changed out the oil (now I have a real clean crankcase!), and I can't believe how dramatic the improvement is!!   The gear whine is just very slight between 45 and 55 on the spedo and hardly noticeable. The shifting is much smoother and acceleration is also.

Thank You  JESS !!      I am sold on this oil!   It was worlds better than the GN4 that was in the bike, better than M1 15/50, and better than GN4 20/50.

So what.  $55. for amazing performance....and QUIET.  I have blown money on much worse things.!!

the auto 10w40 is same oil as the m/c bottle one at lower cost. the m/c just has more anti-rust additives if the m/c sits for more than 6 months.  best amsoil I ever used is their 10w30/30HD diesel oil. was good for 10k miles using oil analysis. just pricey but shifted like butter.  I was a dealer many yrs ago.

Always glad to help when I can.  $13 a quart is what it would be around here too.  I believe Amsoil pioneered synthetic oil, at least in the US.

I never found it in any local auto parts where I live (and there are probably 1000 auto parts stores in my town).  I always had to log on and discover a local dealer and call and arrange a meet-up somewhere halfway between us in some parking lot.  Passing cash money for a box, it always felt like I was doing some kind of drug deal on the low down.   Grin

As I age and put less miles on my bikes, I might go back.... maybe.

I've tried the Mobil 1 T4 bike racing 10/40, the Golden Specro racing 10/40, regular Mobil 1, and now the Shell Rotella T6, and the Amsoil was the quietest of all.  Quiet is not that high on my priorities, but I am sure it is very good for the motor too.  I change all synthetics between 6-8K.

glad it worked out for you using Amsoil 10w-40 which is what I use to use until the price went to near 12 bucks per quart so now this year first time used 5w-40 rotella T6 and the few brief times out so far, so good for 14 bucks for a gallon jug just a smidge over 1 qt. of Amsoil pricing.  Having 4 cycles and 2 ATV's all using 5w-40 rotella T6 saves me over 100 bucks in oil changes easily or more per 7-8 months of riding season.    Good stuff so far no difference to me.

Even using Amsoil 10w-40 after 4000 miles or so my Valk I/S would not like ONLY when VERY HOT out shift down into 1st gear so will see this summer what the rotella t6 does.  FRESH OIL changes though always buttery smooth with using Amsoil the past 7+ years prior before I got ATV and cycle happy buying more and more.

I used the Rotella for awhile but now Mobil 1.  The only real difference I can tell is an aspect of the oils you guys probably don't think about much.  SMELL.  I park where we smell the smells of the bike.  Its hard enough to keep the gas smells to a minimum, the oil smell, there's nothing you can do about it.  That rosmella had to go.  I like the smell of Mobil 1 much better.  Most ladies take to one scent over another mine seems to like the Mobile one best.  LOL

You know, an ounce of Channel #5 probably wouldn't hurt the motor.   Grin

Seriously, the Febrese spray air fresheners seem to be the best long lasting household smell improvers I've ever discovered.  And it doesn't take much.

Better than those terrible green Christmas trees you hang on a rear view mirror.

Scented candles work pretty well too, and you don't even have to burn them, just open a few and spread them around the room.
