Hello Riders,
I just had to do it!! -  I found a set of Two Brothers six in to six headers for my 97 1500.

Install was fine however I am now running too lean.

What are my options - besides putting the stock pipes back on.
Thank you

If you are running a K&N air filter, try going back to stock and see how much that helps

Did you see Sandy's suggestion over on the general board ? Are you sure you are running too lean ?

your not running lean. only the idle mixture screw for each carb needs to be opened to about 3 to 3 1/2 turns from lightly seated/closed. the screws are set lean from factory to meet epa testing.

With his set up whats the average turns out on low speed jets (assuming 35 jet)?

As far as running lean or not!

prior to installation of just one new tbr header - all was perfect.

After installing just one pipe - all still was perfect

Immediately after fire up after both pipes are on - it was sluggish at idle and rev. Good with 1/3 choke.

Good with no choke at 4k rpm - standing still.

Have not ridden yet.

I have come out 1/2 turn and test twice so am at 1 full turn from where they are from the start.
I did not screw them all the way in and then out. did not see the need since all was perfect before I started this whole thing.

I appreciate every thought.

You need to know where your at to fix the problem ... turn them all the way in and back out 2 3/4"turns to start. One maybe way off and ... out means turns them clockwise .. easy to screw up
and go the wrong way.

Turns out I found out that I left one plug wire off.  Put in back on and I was pleased enough for a test ride.
Of coarse I had to idle it back down sine the wire was off on the last test.
Overall I have back it out 1 full turn from the setting it was at befor the install - when it was running perfect with stock pipes.

It pops here and there when I am at idle it is slowing down to almost a stop.  Does not seem to rap down as fast as it did.

Idle at 900 seems normal - the new normal!!

I appreciat all your input.

I am thinking possibly a half turn out might smooth the low end out and restore the idle down transition!!
Any thoughts.

all in all - I am dang happy to have a hot rod sounding bike for sure. Thank you again.

This is James in San Antonio. Glad you’re digging the pipes! The hanging, slow to come down rpm is classic running too lean. The stock fuel screw setting is 1&3/4 turns from bottom. Assuming, that no one messed with the screws before you got the bike or that some have backed out, you can assume that you are now 2&3/4 out from bottom. There is no way to know for sure without bottoming them out first and checking each one. I would try another 1/2 turn, and then only 1/4 turn at a time after that if needed.
