I just purchased a 2001 interstate with a factory installed cb, but don't know how to use it.The manual is not helpful,
I understand the use of the bike controls, but do I need a helmet communication system and where does it plug
into the bike? Thanks for the info.

You don't want that CB.... not worth the effort.  Just take it off your bike and save the weight for better gas MPG.  I will take it off your hands and pay for shipping just to get it out of your garage........    Grin

You should have a Helmet Microphone setup that plugs into the cord between the handlebars and fairing (should be hanging on the fairing)

You need a separate book for the CB.

Find someone that has one.
