Since the K&L float valves are a little longer than OEM, which in effect lowers the float level, should you compensate by opening the pilot screw slightly?

I don't think so.  The fuel level needs to be high enough to maintain function. Adjustments that are not needed will adversely affect function.

The longer floats will either work or they wont

It doesn’t really lower the fuel level, but let’s the float needle stop the flow into the bowl. The tolerances are so close on our carbs that any distortion of the float was letting it hit the carb base before closing off the flow. Even if your floats are not distorted, the difference is going to be minimal in the amount of fuel in the bowl.

it made 1.25mm difference in float height for my bike, but on my bike all the float levels were out so it took them back to stock or within .5mm of the correct height, I left the pilot screws as they were. float height does effect the mix a little but just check your float height when fitting them, if its to far of factory specs change things so its close (replace the float if its too far out)...... but it's not likely to be needed
