CNN presents the truth about the seperation issue if anyone cares to be informed and not bias https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/18/politics/donald-trump-immigration-policies-q-and-a/index.htmlA 1997 court settlement agreed to by the US government in a case called Flores v. Reno, which remains in effect today, The 2008 Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, signed by President George W. Bush, codified parts of the settlement into federal law. An appeals court in 2016 affirmed that Flores applied to all children but reversed the ruling that parents should be released as well.
Operation Streamline was extended to some other Border Patrol sectors and continued under the Obama administration, reaching a peak 97,000 criminal prosecutions in 2013. As this has been an ongoing problem Trump has made headway but it is Congress that needs to make policy on this issue and they refuse to do it, so its not Trump against anyone, its Trump enforcing rules that are on the books. The Trump administration has decided to refer every person caught crossing the border illegally for federal prosecution, a policy that could result in the separation of far more parents from their children at the border. With troubles in South America and the fact that many US citizens have been killed at the hands of illegals and that MS 13 is among those coming in and its known that the first offense at crossing is a misdemeanor the second is a felony why should anyone cross or expect Trump not to protect US citizens when Congress doesn't act? Trump ran on protecting US citizens, Congress has failed to make good policy on this issue, Trump is enforcing the law and keeping campaign promises and not compromising the safety and welfare of the citizens of the US. So why blame Trump? Trump did not write new laws, compromise existing laws he only enforced the laws on the books. So now who is to blame? No other country allows free access to come in, it costs the US billions of dollars to provide free services and lodging. It displaces US workers when they take the jobs that should be a job for a US citizen and there are many who PAID big money to become US citizens, what about being fair to those that did it right? The message is clear, DHS Sec. Nielsen: We Have A Simple Message, “We Will Prosecute You” If You Enter The U.S. Illegally Dont come illegally, dont force your children to come alone, dont give them to anyone else to bring, dont break the law. That seems pretty simple, dont overwhelm the system especially with the numbers that are coming in. Democrat's good job of dividing the country Robert, this cannot be true....Trump says that CNN is 'Fake News' and he is an expert on how to spread fake news.

I just read that this EO is only for 20 days?
Is that true?
Then what?
I would hope that the Legislative branch which is Constitutionally charged with making law, would do their job and make law to fix this. True, of course if it doesn't meet minority approval, it will just be ignored by sanctuaries and vilified by most of the press. That's why comprehensive reform never took place under Obama. It was senseless to revisit everything, and pass a compromise bill only to have the parts that the liberals didn't like nullified in actual practice. That's what we've come to. California is a cancer.

Unfortunately at the moment 90% of my news is right here on this site. I’ve only heard that it didn’t address all the kids they have in custody now. With my limited knowledge, here is my take on the situation. Trump wanted to pressure Congress on funding “the wall”. Page 146 of “Art of the deal” clearly states that when negotiating have more bargaining chips than your opponent. I can not imagine having to explain that decision to my maker.

Keep the families together.
Deport them all IMMEDIATELY to their country of origin.
Take fingerprints and DNA of all who attempt to enter illegally, and put a lifetime ban on them EVER getting legal status.
Tighten up our amnesty laws, our generosity and overly trusting nature is being abused right now, and this must stop.

I will admit I have not read all the replies, the law is the law if you like it or not a child is separated from parent when a crime is committed. All this crap is people acting on emotion not logic but that is the way society is now and unfortunate it is the wheel that gets the grease. Very few stand up for the laws of this country many wants to be the exception, I did nothing wrong, or it was not my fault. The Mexicans bringing there kids are using there children as pawns getting folks to feel sorry for them and react on emotions. The children suffer for the sins of the parents, shame on the parents, keep them together and send them back right away finger printed, tattooed like the jews, I do not give a crap. Do it the legal way. Living in the southwest southern NM, and in Texas for over 45 yrs. I have seen it all and it is time it stops. California is a cancer and if you haven't lived in the boarder states you do not have a clue. Just my opinion feed up.

A higher level view of this: When illegals are caught coming across one of these things can be done with them while waiting trial:
1. Let them loose into society. 2. Detain them. 3. Return them either to the country they crossed from or their home country.
Option 1 is unacceptable, once released into our country they rarely show up for their hearings and just fade into the shadows. Option 3 I'm okay with, but would raise a ruckus with many and be costly if we were to return them to their home country, but I'd be fine with that, we've got plenty of military aircraft that could be used, the pilots need the flight time anyway.
Which brings us to option 2, detain them until their hearings.
Now, if we're going with option 2, there are a few possibilities on how to handle minors caught up in this.
A. Detain them with their family together. B. Detain them in separate minor only facilities. C. Release them to family already in our country (legal immigrants only, of course.)
From my understanding C is done where possible. B is what the Trump administration was doing for the rest, but is switching to A.
Here's the issue with A - Now these minors will be housed in group mixed population with adults, not all of which are nice people.
Kids WILL be abused, raped, hurt, etc by mixing them in with general population.
At least in a minors only facility they could be better protected, watched out for, etc.
So yeah, there's a moral argument FOR separating the kids from the adults.

thats a major part of the problem. We have some here who think if the law seems wrong to them,, don't follow it and encourage others not to follow it. Such things as "Sanctuary" cities for example. We are gearing towards law's mean nothing.

Thats just the thing. The ones all upset over this dont want it to be illegal to sneak across the border. Just welcome them in and hand them all a benefits package and give them a limo ride to where ever they want to live.

I had a great childhood. But my Mom left my Dad, me and my two brothers when I was 5. (She eventually came back) Even though I still had my Dad, it was traumatic. Anybody who thinks these kids aren’t being hurt by this don’t have any idea.
I'm sure you realize and accept that the government was not responsible for your mother's decision. You do seem to believe, as do others, that the government is responsible for the decision some have made to break the law in entering our country by stealth. In this country we do not normally charge minors for adult crimes. The government of the U.S. is doing what they can for the welfare of youngsters that the lawbreakers dragged with them. The separation is not the fault of the enforcers of the law. It's the fault of those who chose to violate the law.

Break the Law-entering Our Country-U S of A-ILLEGALLY. What part of illegal do you NOT understand? Do you want the adults forgiven or do you want the children incarcerated with the adults? How bout this-soon as we round up ANY illegals regardless of age put them right back where the CROSSED from. Or just turn the adults-18 and above-back to whence they crossed. How much Money is being spent on housing food health etc etc to keep the illegal folks comfortable. And B T W-I'd rather have that money spent on Americans. Sound harsh? Tough crap. Come here the Right LEGAL way then we can talk. Come in Any Other way then get the heck outa My Country. I can NOT afford to feed house clothe or take care of your medical needs from my check. They-illegals-took a chance rolled the dice and crapped out. How in the hell is THAT the fault of America or Americans? Splain dat to me Lucy. RIDE SAFE.

They still need to to put in a two mile deep, multi-density mine field from CA to TX.
Cheaper and more effective than a wall. No medical or rescue for injuries, vultures and worms gotta eat too.

The Donald J Trump Commerce Canal. From San Diego to Brownsville.
Better than wall. Generates revenue. Creates Jobs for decades. Multi ports of entry along the way. Reduced transportation costs.
It would only be like building 20 panama canals only end to end.

FWIW-
MILAN (AP) Italy's hard-line interior minister on Thursday refused port to a Dutch-flagged rescue boat with 224 migrants on board, a week after turning away another foreign ship, the Aquarius, carrying 630 migrants.
Matteo Salvini said the ship operated by the German aid group Mission Lifeline had loaded the migrants in Libyan waters after the Italian coast guard told it to leave the rescues to the Libyan coast guard. Salvini said he had contacted the Dutch ambassador about the ship's activities, adding that the migrants "will only see Italy on a postcard."
Mission Lifeline said it conducted the rescue in international waters and asked for a safe port, which had not been assigned, adding "'we are sailing northward." The ship's position Thursday night was not clear.
The aid group has rescued 675 migrants since 2016, until now handing them over to other ships to continue rescues at sea. This is the first time it is requesting a port.
"Mission Lifeline fears that a similar situation to the Aquarius ... could be on the horizon," the group said in a statement, adding that the additional days at sea had health consequences for some of the Aquarius passengers. "Therefore the NGO calls on the competent authorities to swiftly react to their obligation to designate a place of safety."
Spokesman Axel Steier said in an email that the condition of the migrants was "OK," but said migrants coming from Libya typically faced "torture, rapes, slavery." He said the passengers need protection and that the group is looking for a safe port "such as Lampedusa or Pozzallo," both in Sicily.
"We never were in Libyan waters!" he said.
Italy's transport minister, Danilo Toninelli, told the news agency ANSA after a Cabinet meeting late Thursday that the Lifeline remained in Libyan waters, according to Italian coast guard officials. He also said that the ship would be seized by Italian authorities if it arrived in Italy.
The Aquarius, operated by SOS Mediterranee and Doctors Without Borders, took the migrants to Spain, traveling an additional 1,500 kilometers (932 miles), after Italy and Malta refused to let them land.
Salvini has likened such rescue ships to taxi services that finish the job for migrant smugglers. He also has pointed out the failure of other European Union nations to take their share of migrants headed for Europe, a point that Italy will press in upcoming EU meetings. Salvini has threatened that Italy will withhold its payments to the EU if it doesn't get more help on the migrant issue.
Some 640,000 migrants have landed in Italy since 2014. The numbers are down dramatically this year, to some 14,500, more than 80 percent lower than in 2017.

I still believe that all illegal immigrants should be shipped back to where they came from immediately. But, you really seem to have a problem with me personally. I don't know if it is because as an immigrant yourself, you feel that I diminish the process that you had to go through to get your citizenship, or are you still butt hurt because I once told you that you were a sycophant to some of the guys here, so that you be accepted more by the 'real' Americans.

Do you really think any Dems care about illegal immigration they care for one reason, to buy votes. So why all the noise all of a sudden when this has been going on a long time, Breaking: Dems Reject Legislative Fix To Stop Family Separations, “Want To Keep Focus On Trump” Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) on Tuesday dismissed a legislative proposal backed by Republican leaders to keep immigrant families together at the border, arguing that President Trump could fix the problem more easily with a flick of his pen. Come on Obama chose not to fix it, Congress could have so then why do they want to keep the focus on Trump. Lets see maybe this is the reason. Its one of the best tricks they have in their arsenal to keep people from knowing the truth. If they start being prosecuted dont you think that the blame game would stop and we could see real results?

I skipped much of the responses due to same arguments, same reasoning, etc. I am leaving for El Salvador in 3 weeks. Been going there for 11 years now. I personally know a former gang member who has gone to all extremes trying to leave the gang. When I first met him, he had cut off his gang tattoos with his knife. He has terrible scars left. He fled and hid and moved around a lot. They caught him and attacked him, gutting him and leaving him for dead. He survived. Another friend has had to flee for his life because he was teaching gang members about Jesus, and actually winning some over to change their ways. He went to Guatemala, and is preaching God's word there. The gangs are brutal. People die everyday by violence there. It is a dangerous country, kinda like Chicago or Detroit, LA, etc. They do niot have the resources we do in this country to find and prosecute gang killers. People leave for many reasons, much are not escaping life and death issues from what I have studied, but some are. For those, I sympathize with their plight, but breaking our countries laws is not the answer. This is mostly just liberal dogma. It will fade away soon as some other ,"thing", becomes the big thing to talk about Trump. I wish we could take all refugees, and their children, but we cannot. Where will this all end? Common sense says there must be law and order. For the most part, we have laws, and we have order.

Welcome those who choose to enter legally and jump through the necessarily difficult hoops to do so with open arms, and when or if they earn their citizenship, greet them as fellow Americans.
Serk, Sadly, you are one of only a few sane people on here about this subject. It's really sad when people on here cannot have compassion for the kids. Yes, a crime is committed, but how you handle the punishment reveals your nature. Pass them right through to Canada. That's the ticket. Show your compassion. Get in touch with your Govt and tell 'em you'll pick up the tab for the flight, accommodation, food etc Go on and then show us your email/letter telling your Govt. Go on. Make me laugh. Pass the through to Canada???Hell no...just Ottawa Canada and preferably to bscrives address if he is willing to show several thousand lawbreakers some Liberal "mercy"... These people are illegal...and for those who may not "Get It"...that means they entered a sovereign country without that country's permission...lock em' up and if they intentionally involved their children in that crime, charge them with aiding and abetting as well. Here in Canada, intentionally involving a minor in a crime is an indictable offence, and if that minor is your child social services may come knocking and remove said minor from your custody. Obviously, you and Britman never learned how to read properly. I agreed with Serk, but for some reason you two think that I want them released. I think that you two should learn to read someone's comment fully before you comment. I guess you believe Serk should have them in his house as well. All I added is that you should have compassion for the kids, but I guess you guys don't have any. You two are truly sad individuals if that is the case. How do you know where my "compassion" boundaries lie? I have paid more money to the immigrant plight in the USA than you have. Oh yeah, that's right you live in Canada. How helpful have you been in the last 25 years to the immigrant plight in the USA? - The time I've lived in the USA. Please let us see the communication you had with your Govt regarding the immigrant plight . http://www.neverhome.ca/detention/https://nowtoronto.com/news/the-truth-about-canada%E2%80%99s-immigration-detention-system-is-shocking/I never said that I agreed with our immigration laws. I am sure that they suck in a whole lot of ways. The only thing I disagreed with most on here is that the kids should not be taken from the parents. So you want the kids in jail with the adults? Sending them back immediately would be almost impossible.walk them back across the border then they come back and eventually there would be 100's of 1000's crossing at one time. How big would the border patrol have to be to stop that? If you ever have to go to jail do you want your kids or grandkids in there with you? I thought not.

Hmm, almost sounds like we need a wall instead of a revolving door. Going back to the root cause of this whole thread, until we stop people from coming in without permission there will never be a solution. We DO need guest workers and skilled workers, both are on hold while we futz around with both sides playing hardball. Damn shame that one side supports breaking the law.

You misunderstood my post. First, I know the government didn’t make my Mom take off. Second, I don’t think the government is responsible for people breaking the law. I was responding to the theory that these kids are just fine and not traumatized being separated from their parents. Seems to be a common idea and I thought a personal antidote would shed some light on this misconception.

The bigger question becomes, if the parents are being incarcerated because they're accused of a crime, and the minors need to be kept SOMEWHERE, are those minors better off being kept in an adult prison with adults of unknown moral fortitude, or kept in dedicated locales set up to take care of, and keep minors separate and protected from adults?

Because the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said he had to: " in 1997 that the Federal government made an agreement not to keep unaccompanied illegal immigrant children beyond 20 days in a case called “City of Boerne v. Flores.” ” The settlement said nothing about accompanied illegal immigrant children – children who crossed the border with their parents. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals then ruled that accompanied children also could not be held in custody under the terms of the settlement. This meant that the government either had to release whole families, or that the government had to separate parents from children.”" Source - https://www.bongino.com/five-things-you-need-to-know-about-separation-at-the-border/

Trump hears people, he made promises, he cares about people and wants the country to come back to its roots and cares that some are falling prey to bad immigration laws and becoming involved in human trafficking. The Democrats and those against closed boarders are making to much noise, because if they can sow discord then they think they will get votes. Trump also made an executive order that addressed the issue of the kids being separated from parents, something congress should have done 60 years ago Good article, quick, simple and reflects Trumps views. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2018/06/21/trump_extremist_open-border_democrats_allowed_this_to_happen_its_a_whole_big_con_job.htmlCABINET MEETING: President Trump mentions immigration Thursday https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=31&v=SsHABvpPrYIRemember the battle cry viva the resistance, well the cost of this resistance is human lives, slowing legislation that could help and destroying and dividing a country. I know its Hannity and Fox news but he fairly and honestly lays out all the problems and addresses the problems with Congress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz97pUULgokI can also remember that some here said leave the kids out of the battle on Obama but on Peter Fonda on Barron Trump I hear crickets. This is the problem with the resistance and what is happening in the US now. Constructive legislation is NOT resistance, its congress coming together to shape and fashion laws and controls that are good for the people. This is not a Congress we have had for many years and not just one or two administrations but many.

well said Serk. I am a Legal immigrant coming here in 1959 when I was eleven years old. We had to have background checks and a sponsor willing to be responsible for us. Don’t break the law and you won’t be arrested and sperated from your kids. I am so tired of this constant crap where we make believe that those that can illegally cross into our country should be treated as well or better than the citizens who live here. Oh and I agree with Brittman in asking why it was needed to bring this elephant into this forum again. Keep the families together.
Deport them all IMMEDIATELY to their country of origin.

Irony can be so ironic;
BRUSSELS (AP) The Latest on immigration issues in Europe (all times local):
5:30 p.m.
French President Emmanuel Macron says that France and Spain want arriving migrants in Europe to be quickly placed in "closed centers" so authorities can decide whether they're eligible to apply for asylum.
Macron spoke Saturday after meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who was on his first foreign trip since taking office on June 2. The visit came a day before some EU leaders meet informally in Brussels to try to find a common approach to migration before an EU summit later next week.
Macron is seeking backers for the hot-button issue that he stressed has become a political, not a migration, crisis. Other EU countries such as Italy are pressing an anti-migrant approach.
A proposal by EU Council President Donald Tusk puts those migrant centers outside of Europe.
___
4:20 p.m.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz says his country will reintroduce controls on its border with Italy if Germany were to turn back migrants at its border to Austria.
Kurz told daily German tabloid Bild on Saturday "we would do everything possible to protect our borders ... including border protection at the Brenner" one of the main Austrian-Italian border crossings.
Kurz' remarks came ahead of a Sunday meeting of European leaders hoping to find common ground for tackling the issue of migrants arriving on European shores a growing political crisis that is threatening to undermine European Union.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is at odds with her interior minister, Horst Seehofer, about how to decrease the influx of migrants to the country. Seehofer has threatened to turn back some migrants at the German-Austrian border if Merkel doesn't find a European-wide solution on migration.
___
3:45 p.m.
Malta's premier is telling a German aid group to reroute its rescue ship away from the Mediterranean island to avoid further escalation of another European standoff over helping migrants.
The German NGO Mission Lifeline says it has 234 migrants aboard its vessel and is adrift in international waters waiting for a safe port to dock. Italy has refused it entry, saying Lifeline had acted improperly by taking on board migrants who the Italian coast guard had assigned to the Libyan coast guard to rescue.
On Saturday, the Maltese armed forces provided humanitarian supplies to the Lifeline vessel.
Maltese Premier Joseph Muscat tweeted that Malta had "no responsibility" in the rescue and that the Lifeline "should move from its position toward their original destination (in Italy) to prevent escalation" of the situation.
___
2:50 p.m.
Spanish authorities say they have rescued 569 migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa to Spain by boat.
Spain's Maritime Rescue Service says those rescued Saturday included 264 people in 16 boats in the Strait of Gibraltar, a busy shipping lane with treacherous currents. Two men were pulled from a canoe.
Fair weather and calm seas in recent days have brought an uptick in migrants' attempts to reach the Spanish coast via the Western Mediterranean route.
Also, Spain's new center-left government recently announced a softer stance on migration, extending public health care to foreigners without residence permits.
A week ago, Spain took in 630 migrants from the French aid ship Aquarius after Malta and Italy, which were closer, refused to grant the ship access to their ports.
___
11 a.m.
European Union leaders on Sunday will try to find common ground for tackling migrants arriving on Europe's shores in search of better lives a growing political crisis threatening to undermine the entire EU project.
The leaders of about 16 countries more than half the 28-nation bloc will take part in what is being billed as "informal talks" in Brussels, ahead of a full EU summit on June 28-29, where migration will top the agenda.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the meeting involves "talking with particularly affected nations about all problems connected with migration."
The arrival of more than one million people in 2015, most fleeing conflict in Syria and Iraq, exposed glaring deficiencies in EU migrant reception capacities and asylum laws. It has fueled tensions among member states, and anti-migrant parties have won votes by fomenting public fears of foreigners.

Too little, too late for the EU.
The whole EU political system is culpable especially the pols in Brussels - the equivalent of D.C.
That pooch is well and truly screwed. Could the USA learn from it. Sure. Will it? Doubt it?

I know its not totally germane to the original topic but I was thinking (I know).
For all of those folks out there who believe that we should have open borders or automatically allow anyone in to our country that says they fear for their lives, how does that compare to "gated communities".
Should I, if I am in fear for my life, be allowed into any gated community of my choice? Are gated communities even acceptable in a society with open borders?
Who lives in gated communities? What are their political beliefs?
So, if we are going to have open borders, I suggest the next thing to do is to outlaw "gated communities" Its not fair to the rest of us.
I did a search and the number of gated communities in the US appears to be vague. One place said there we're 20,000 such communities across the US.
